xMEMS Labs today introduced Tomales, the first single-chip MEMS tweeter speaker. Tomales' top-voicing and side-voicing packaging options and a thin 1mm thickness simplify speaker assembly and placement for direct-to-ear delivery of audio in smart glasses and extended reality (xR) headset applications. In a 3cm free-air, Tomales can reach 75dB SPL (sound pressure level) at 2kHz, 90dB at 4kHz, and over 108dB at 10kHz. Tomales uses the xMEMS second-generation M2 speaker driver architecture, and the improvements in SPL/mm2 allow it to increase loudness in a smaller form factor.
Mike Housholder, vice president of marketing and business development at xMEMS, said: "Producing high-quality audio in a form factor as thin as an eyeglass frame is a big challenge. It is difficult to produce satisfactory bass response with a single speaker at the same time. Acoustic and instrumental richness.Tomales are ideal for two-channel bass-treble installations, their small size and slim profile allow for ideal treble clarity, presence and loudness for voices, vocals and instruments, Exactly what the current smart glasses and xR headset products are missing."
Like all loudspeakers from xMEMS, Tomales is a single-chip architecture where the actuation and diaphragm are made of "silicon", so the consistency of the frequency response of each part is unparalleled and can be manufactured to reduce speaker pairing or Adjustment time. This patented and innovative sound-exit structure results in an ultra-fast and precise loudspeaker that eliminates the spring and suspension systems used by traditional coil loudspeakers for audio signal quality and sound field reproduction. SMT-ready packaging and IP58 dust/water resistance simplify system design, integration and assembly.
Tomales samples and evaluation kits are available to select customers now, with mass production expected in the second quarter of 2022. Tomales are available in top-sound (6.05 x 8.4 x 1.15mm) and side-sound (6.05 x 1.15 x 8.4mm) LGA packages and are used with xMEMS Aptos Class-H audio signal amplifiers (1.92 x 1.92 x 0.6mm WLCSP).
