Networked devices around the world are changing people’s way of life and work. An integral part of this change is the communication network that connects these devices and enables them to “talk” to each other. In this context, the 5g network with faster speed and higher bandwidth is a significant progress, but we still need to treat it objectively. Despite the wide publicity around 5g, in fact, 4G and various low-power wide area networks (lpwan) have realized many service projects enabled by 5g.

Even so, the core technology supporting 5g still makes breakthroughs compared with the past in some important aspects, including fundamentally redefining the concept of communication network. The first four generations of mobile communication technologies are based on physical architecture. Although 5g also involves new hardware, it is first a virtual network and will eventually realize the integration of network and wireless communication.

Although this breakthrough will spark a wave of innovation, the greatest impact of 5G will probably be felt through new uses or enhancements of wireless technology: it may include fourth industrial revolution (4IR) infrastructure, smart city, self driving car, remote surgery and a more powerful new AI (AI) system.

The novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak is a global public health emergency. Due to the “home order” issued by the government, many people will use the communication technology that increasingly relies on 5g network to work at home. Novel coronavirus pneumonia companies are better informed by their digital transformation. They have invested in technology, network security and flexible working ability, and have been rewarded for coping with the new crown pneumonia epidemic.

However, these changes have also led to stricter network security review. Some commentators believe that 5g will increase the potential targets of adversary network attacks, because 5g has more connected devices and distributed edge computing capability compared with previous technologies. However, the possible vulnerabilities of 5g come from other factors of 5g ecosystem, especially the security of terminal devices. The good news is that these security challenges faced by 5g networks can be overcome, which provides a solid foundation for all parties to participate in global innovation and realize the broad prospect of 5g technology application.
