Virtual reality (VR) technology, once sought after by the market, seems to be quiet and low-key in recent years. However, it is estimated that soon it will usher in the highlight moment. The 2019 world VR Industry Conference (hereinafter referred to as the “conference”) was recently held in Nanchang with the theme of “VR makes the world more exciting – VR + 5g opens a new era of perception”. VR and 5g have become the key words of the conference. In the 4G era, VR industry has been suffering from the bandwidth limitation of 4G network environment and can not be widely used. With the arrival of 5g, the VR industry is expected to usher in an explosion.
China’s VR industry has great potential
“China is one of the regions with the most active innovation and entrepreneurship in the global virtual reality industry, the highest market acceptance and the greatest development potential,” Miao Wei, Minister of industry and information technology, said at the conference.
It is understood that in the guidance on accelerating the development of virtual reality industry published by the Ministry of industry and information technology in January 2019, it is proposed that the overall strength of China’s virtual reality industry should enter the forefront of the world in 2025.
From the demand side, the concept of VR has been developing in recent years, and people’s understanding of VR has been increasing. According to IDC Research Report, the growth rate of VR / AR consumption expenditure in China is expected to be higher than 100% in 2019 and 2020.
From the perspective of industry scale, VR is expected to usher in the second development peak. According to the data of iResearch consulting, the scale of China’s VR market in 2018 was 23.04 billion yuan, and it is expected to reach 79.02 billion yuan in 2021, maintaining rapid growth.
How can 5g enable VR?
We don’t know how 5g will change VR, but we know it will change them. Soon, high-performance computers and graphics cards will become history. All users need a fast Internet connection to present high-quality VR content. With the 5g blessing, VR may become the third screen other than smart phones and TVs. Compared with mobile phones and TVs, VR has a broader vision and a more realistic feeling.
As Liu Wenqiang, vice president of China Electronic Information Industry Development Research Institute, said at the conference, virtual reality and cutting-edge technologies such as 5g, artificial intelligence and big data cloud computing have been continuously integrated, innovated and developed, which further promoted the application of virtual reality and gave birth to new business forms and services. He believes that the sensing, interaction, modeling and presentation technologies related to virtual reality are maturing. Virtual reality and 5g, artificial intelligence, big data cloud computing and other cutting-edge technologies continue to integrate, innovate and develop, further promote the application of virtual reality, and give birth to new business forms and services.
How to build a good VR Expressway?
If the Internet is compared to a highway, then the application of the Internet in all its forms is like all kinds of transportation on the highway. VR and AR will become the most important first batch of 5g applications.
Although China’s VR industry has broad prospects, there are still problems such as insufficient key technologies, lack of content and service education, imperfect innovation support system and imperfect utilization ecology. It is necessary to strengthen industrial linkage around key nodes of the industrial chain such as technology, standards, products and application services to jointly promote the development of VR industry.
“AR and VR technologies should also follow the path of openness, open source and ecological development,” said Wang Endong, academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering, executive president and chief scientist of Inspur Group.
From the perspective of users, the content and application of VR are not rich enough and are in the primary stage; From an ecological point of view, there is a lack of standardization system. These require the efforts of large manufacturers, third-party research institutions and developers.
Therefore, in order to build a good VR expressway, all parties should deeply analyze and tap the direct and indirect value of the virtual reality industry, enhance the consumer experience, explore the open cooperation mode, and promote the all-round systematic development of the industry.
