Commercial motherboards basically use a large number of pin electrolytic capacitors, because electrolytic capacitors have low cost and large capacitance. The commercial motherboard adopts a 4-layer PCB design. The general PCB circuit board is divided into four layers. The top and bottom layers are the signal layer, and the middle two layers are the grounding layer and power layer. The grounding layer and power layer are placed in the middle. The industrial control motherboard adopts the PCB circuit board design with more than 6 layers, which is designed to strengthen the anti electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility ability of the motherboard and enhance the stability of the motherboard.

4. Service cycle of industrial control motherboard

Different from commercial mainboards with a service life of 2 to 3 years, most industrial control mainboards require a service life of more than 3 years, and some high-quality industrial control mainboards even have a service life of 5-7 years.

1. Power consumption of CPU

The industrial control motherboard generally selects a low-power CPU to adapt to the complex environmental applications of the industrial control industry.

2. Circuit design of CPU

Because the industrial control motherboard needs to adapt to the industrial application environment of wide temperature and wide voltage, the voltage adaptation range of the industrial control motherboard is wider than that of the commercial motherboard. The voltage range of the industrial control motherboard is generally between 9-36v. For the circuit layout and design of CPU, it is required to be more precise.

3. Different anti electromagnetic interference capabilities

Due to the market positioning and good use environment of commercial motherboards, their products generally only do commercial electromagnetic compatibility test, and their anti electromagnetic wave interference ability is low. As the industrial control motherboard is aimed at the industrial market, it has high requirements for the ability to resist electromagnetic wave interference, so it needs to pass EMI, EMC and other tests and certification.

3、 Production scheduling process and inspection process

Most of the time, the industrial control motherboard is developed according to a certain application and may only adapt to a certain application, so its use is very limited, while the commercial motherboard is popular, so it can be put into operation at one time. Due to the output, the cost allocation of industrial control motherboard will be much higher than that of commercial motherboard. This is also an aspect of the cost difference between industrial control motherboard and commercial motherboard.

Some large manufacturers test commercial motherboards through three test processes: ICT, fusion and manu. Most manufacturers only pass one test process for commercial motherboards: ICT. ICT is a circuit test to check whether there is an open circuit or short circuit. At this time, no peripherals (CPU, DIMM and other fixtures) are added, so as to avoid burning the fixtures in the later function. Fund is mainly a function test. It will add peripherals such as CPU and DIMM to do a boot test. All problems will be found here. It’s ok if fund basically passes. Manu is actually measured. All peripherals are connected, boot test, compatibility detection, etc.

Before the production of industrial control motherboard, it is necessary to strictly pass multiple test processes, generally T5 ~ T7. In addition to ICT, fusion and Manu, it is also necessary to do tests, such as temperature, vibration and safety, so as to ensure the quality of each motherboard.

4、 Size specification

At present, the commercial motherboard mainly adopts ATX architecture.

In order to adapt to a variety of application environments, the industrial control motherboard adopts motherboards with high integration, small volume and various sizes and specifications, including 3-inch board, 5-inch board, ATX, micro ATX, LPX, half length card, full-length card and other specifications.

5、 Interface support

Commercial motherboards can only provide four PCI slots. Due to PCI specification, the driving capacity of pci4 is basically greatly attenuated. Therefore, most commercial motherboards only provide three PCI slots.

In addition to supporting PCI and PCIe slots, the industrial control motherboard can also support Mini PCIe, COM port, USB port and other interfaces. Embedded GPIO bus can realize GPI and GPO functions. Moreover, the industrial half length card and full-length card can cooperate with the backplane and have more scalability, supporting multiple PCI, PCIe and mini PCIe extensions. Of course, 3.5-inch and other embedded motherboards belong to customized specifications, and their scalability will not be considered too much.

6、 Use environment

Industrial control motherboards often work in complex environments (damp, vibration, dusty, radiation, high temperature, etc.), and most commercial motherboards can only operate in stable environments (indoor, normal temperature, etc.).

7、 Protection function

The commercial motherboard does not provide any protection function. Through special design, the industrial control motherboard can realize the functions of watchdog automatic restart and anti surge impact in case of crash and other abnormal conditions, so as to fully ensure the requirements of high stability of the system in harsh environment.

8、 Customization

Once the ordinary commercial motherboard is produced, it can no longer be changed according to the market demand, and there is no customized design. The industrial control motherboard can flexibly meet the subsequent special needs of customers, realize customization, and better and more perfectly cooperate with the use environment of customers.
