Ti sensors provide ultra-high accuracy at speeds up to 20 ksps and reduce power consumption by at least 70%
Beijing (October 13, 2021) – Texas Instruments (TI) (NASDAQ Code: TxN) today launched ti’s accurate 3D Hall effect position sensor. With tmag5170, engineers can achieve ultra-high precision without calibration at speeds up to 20 ksps, so as to achieve faster and more accurate real-time control in factory automation and motor drive applications. The sensor also provides integrated functions and diagnostic characteristics, which can greatly improve the design flexibility and system security, and the power consumption is at least 70% lower than that of similar devices. Tmag5170 is the first device in TI’s new 3D Hall effect position sensor series, which can meet various industrial needs including ultra-high performance applications and general-purpose applications.

Achieve faster and more accurate real-time control
Tmag5170 is ti’s first 3D Hall effect position sensor, which can provide as low as 2.6% of full-scale total error at room temperature. It also has a total error drift as low as 3% (at least 30% lower than similar competitors), and the error is at least 35% lower than similar devices in the presence of transverse axis field. In conclusion, these characteristics enable tmag5170 to provide higher accuracy than any other 3D Hall effect position sensor, without terminal calibration and off chip error compensation, and simplify system design and manufacturing. With the help of integrated functions and diagnostic features, the design flexibility and system security are improved to a greater extent
Tmag5170 can realize the flexible orientation of sensors and magnets through the integrated characteristics of angle calculation engine, average measurement, gain and offset compensation without off-chip calculation. These features simplify the design and greatly improve the system flexibility. No matter how the sensors are placed, they can realize faster control loop, shorten system delay and simplify the software development process. The integrated computing function of the sensor can also reduce the processor load of the system by up to 25%, enabling engineers to use general-purpose MCU, such as TI’s low-power MSP430 ™ MCU to reduce the total system cost to a greater extent.
In addition, tmag5170 improves safety with a unique set of intelligent diagnostic functions (such as checking communication, continuity and internal signal path) and diagnostic functions that can be configured for external power supply, magnetic field and system temperature. Tmag5170 provides a variety of operation modes. Compared with other linear 3D Hall effect position sensors, tmag5170 can reduce power consumption by at least 70% while maintaining system performance. With these configurable modes, engineers can reduce power consumption for battery powered devices in the sampling range of 1 SPS to 20 ksps or in light load mode focusing on system efficiency.
