According to the survey conducted by trendforce, the global AR / VR device shipment is expected to reach 5.12 million units in 2020. From 2021 to 2022, driven by the brand manufacturers’ expected launch of more spectacle AR / VR devices, the market will grow significantly, and it is expected to grow to 43.2 million units by 2025.
Microled has many advantages, such as high brightness, high resolution and low power consumption. It is more suitable for VR / AR head mounted near eye display applications. Therefore, many manufacturers are rushing into the field of microled technology. Microled display applications are ready.
What are the latest developments and plans of various manufacturers in the field of microledar glasses? Ledinside, the optoelectronic research office of trendforce, briefly reviews the recent trends of eight ar manufacturers in microled for readers’ reference.
The prototype of Apple AR / VR glasses will be mass produced in early 2022 at the earliest
Apple has been laying out AR Business for many years. Judging from the new patent of AR head display recently released by apple, apple is likely to build its ar smart glasses based on microled technology.
According to foreign media reports, the prototype of Apple AR / VR glasses is expected to appear at the end of 2021, while the mass production plan will be postponed to the beginning of 2022. The related equipment will be available at the end of the first quarter of 2022 at the earliest, and the first year’s shipment is estimated to be 2 million units.
Facebook’s new microledar smart glasses will come out as soon as 2023
Besides apple, Facebook is also developing VR glasses. In March this year, apple and Plessey reached an exclusive partnership, and Plessey will provide them with microled displays. The new microledar smart glasses are expected to be available between 2023 and 2025.
It is worth mentioning that in September, Facebook announced that it will cooperate with luxuxica, a multinational glasses manufacturing giant, to develop smart glasses. Both sides will launch the first cooperative product under ray ban brand, which is expected to be released in 2021, but it is not ar glasses yet.
However, based on the multi-year cooperation agreement between Facebook and ray ban, it can be speculated that the future microledar glasses to be launched by Facebook may also use ray ban as the brand.
Vuzix will launch two microledar glasses in 2021
Currently, Vuzix’s microled smart glasses product line is in the development stage. According to Vuzix, there are two versions of the microled smart glasses product line, which are mid price and high-end enterprises, and are expected to be introduced into the market in 2021.
In addition, Vuzix announced a new generation of binocular microledar glasses in September this year. At present, the AR glasses are applying for patents and are expected to be available in 2021.
It is worth noting that Vuzix has obtained 90 patents including microled display and 166 patents under application, with the focus on wearable computers and AR smart glasses.
Plessey produces microled display module for AR / MR
In February this year, Plessey and compoundphotonics (CP), an American microled solution provider, developed and launched microdisplay solutions based on silicon-based Gan microled in Ar / MR application field, and produced the first batch of fully addressable microled display modules for AR / Mr.
From the perspective of R & D, Plessey’s research on silicon-based Gan is almost aimed at Ar / MR and wearable HUD devices. The advantages of silicon-based Gan include higher brightness, smaller pixel spacing, higher density and higher thermal conductivity, which are also the technical requirements of lightweight ar glasses in the future.
It is worth noting that CP has launched a high-performance digital backplane, which can help microled technology manufacturers achieve high-resolution micro display subsystem integration, so as to achieve the world’s smallest microledar display.
Axus and CP will cooperate to build monolithic integrated microled display for AR
In October this year, axus, a global supplier of semiconductor application chemical mechanical polishing (CMP), wafer thinning and wafer polishing surface treatment solutions in the United States, announced a cooperation with CP to integrate key wafer level processes for mass production of 2 μ m pixel spacing and 1080pmicroled display of CP’s next generation ar glasses.
At the same time, axus and Plessey also cooperate in the field of high-performance silicon-based Gan monolithic microleds.
Glo plans to achieve mass production of microled displays for AR / VR by the end of 2020
Glo, a microled start-up, began to exhibit microled display achievements developed with partners last year. At CES early this year, glo launched a full-color microled display for AR / VR and other headwear devices.
This product uses rgbled technology and 0.7-inch CMOS backplane to realize full color. The size of rgbled chip is only 10 * 10um, but the PPI is 525, and the gray scale of the picture is about 10000nits.
In addition, mass production schedule has always been the focus of the industry. Glo plans to mass produce small area microled displays such as AR / VR or smart watch by the end of 2020.
Foxconn is developing microledar glasses, which are expected to be released in 2022
According to reports, Foxconn is developing ar glasses based on microled scheme, and plans to complete the development of AR glasses in 2022, and will test them in retail, industrial, medical and other scenarios.
It is worth noting that Foxconn has been cooperating with apple in the field of AR glasses, which makes people wonder whether the microledar glasses developed by Foxconn are related to apple.
At present, many enterprises in the industry regard microled as a new outlet for VR / AR to develop new high-definition micro display technology. Several international giants such as apple, Facebook and Plessey have been involved in R & D and mass production preparation. Which manufacturer will be the first to break through the massive transfer technology and launch microledar glasses? Let’s wait and see.
