After predicting the iPhones in 2019 and 2020, Guo Mingxuan released a report again, predicting that Apple will adopt the on-screen fingerprint identification scheme on the iPhone in 2021. What’s more striking is that Apple will continue to retain the face ID configuration after adding the screen fingerprint. In other words, users can continue to use the ultra fast “brush face” recognition in addition to “brush fingerprint” to unlock the mobile phone.

Therefore, if Apple adds screen fingerprint identification to the iPhone, it is most conducive to the choice of supply, shipment and market reputation, which is Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint identification scheme. In fact, the news that Apple will use ultrasonic screen fingerprint has not been exposed by analysts and the media for the first time. As early as 2017, the technology media Appleinsider reported that Apple’s screen fingerprint patent document “No. 9772721” was approved, that is, in the year when iPhone 8 and iPhone X were released, apple owned the patent of this ultrasonic technology.

However, according to the technology and practical application at that time, apple did not apply this new technology on the then and even the latest iPhone. This may be considering that the ultrasonic screen fingerprint technology was not mature at that time, and on the other hand, it may be to control the overall thickness of the iPhone. In fact, since the cancellation of 3D touch on iPhone XR last year, there has been a saying in the supply chain and technology media that Apple will completely cancel 3D touch. The screen fingerprint identification plan predicted by Guo Mingyu also proves the possibility of Apple canceling 3D touch in the next generation iPhone.

At present, the pressure sensing system of 3D touch is set at the bottom of the screen. If the screen fingerprint identification module is added while retaining the module, it will inevitably increase the power consumption and thickness of the touch part of the mobile phone. Therefore, removing the 3D touch module to place the ultrasonic screen fingerprint identification component seems to be a feasible scheme that can not only expand the function, but also control the thickness of the mobile phone. However, it seems a little empty to look at the pictures alone. Let’s look at the current ultrasonic recognition technology.

Samsung Galaxy S10 uses Qualcomm’s screen fingerprint identification scheme. Because it adopts ultrasonic principle identification rather than optical principle, the penetration of ultrasonic identification is stronger than photoelectric identification. For example, when the hands are wet, dirty and there are stains on the screen surface, the ultrasonic identification can be unlocked, while the photoelectric fingerprint is relatively slow. Because the principle of photoelectric scheme is reflected by light rather than ultrasonic, stains will have a certain impact on the reflected light

However, the ultrasonic solution also has two problems: one is that the required power consumption is still large, which is what Guo Mingying said in the report, and the enterprise needs to continue to optimize the “power consumption”; The other is that the manufacturing process of ultrasonic fingerprint module is complex, and at present, only Qualcomm has the ability to mass produce the identification module, so the production cost of ultrasonic identification module is also higher than that of optoelectronics.

However, it is worth mentioning that although Qualcomm may launch a new generation of technology in the second half of this year, it does not mean that the technology will be applied in the market immediately.

However, I think it still needs a question mark whether Apple will eventually choose Qualcomm as the screen recognition supplier. After all, cook once said in this year’s Q3 earnings conference that he should master the core technology. Although this is only the reason why cook expressed Apple’s acquisition of Intel’s baseband department, it does not rule out that Apple will choose other suppliers or self-developed solutions for the key function of “fingerprint identification” in the future. Of course, from the current technology and production capacity, Qualcomm should be Apple’s best component supplier.

Guo Mingyu’s report predicted the screen fingerprint, but what actually attracted me was face ID. Whether it is predicted that 2020 iPhones will join TOF or 2021 will join screen fingerprint this time, the name face ID has not been absent. This also reflects one point on the side: face ID will still be one of Apple’s indispensable development core functions. Even on the iPhone two years later, even if there are TOF and screen fingerprints, they will not replace face ID.

In his report, Guo Mingyu believed that “the relationship between face ID and screen recognition technology is complementary rather than competitive.” I agree with this statement, because even with screen recognition technology, face recognition will still be the second choice to supplement the unlocking efficiency, so it is necessary to retain the face ID that Apple has been optimizing.

Moreover, with the progress of VR and wearable devices, users may use iPhone when wearing head display devices in the future, so it is necessary to develop screen fingerprint technology. In addition, Guo Mingyu believes that screen fingerprint technology is also expected to be used in Apple watch and other devices, because compared with the need for an additional set of components such as lens and infrared projector, screen fingerprint identification should be the most ideal biometric scheme for this small-size device. However, from the beginning of writing this article to the end, I still can’t think of how Apple will design the iPhone screen when the face ID remains.
