On March 20, 2020, the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) UAV Squadron (vmu-1) leased the MQ-9A UAV of general atomic aviation systems (General Atomic company) for the first combat flight in the Middle East. With the assistance of general aviation, vmu-1 uses MQ-9A UAV to support the forward deployed Marine Corps. Since September 2018, the U.S. Marine Corps has completed more than 7000 rental flights.
Vmu-1 is currently leasing MQ-9A UAVs to meet its persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) emergency needs in Afghanistan. The U.S. Marine Corps will convert the MQ-9A lease contract into a purchase contract next year, and general atomics will continue to cooperate with vmu-1.
