There is a lot of talk today about sustainability and energy efficiency. As a country that has long relied on coal and oil, we are slowly working towards more green energy solutions to propel us forward.

Unfortunately, there are problems with our current energy systems and power supplies, and it goes well beyond squirrels chewing on wires. In short, the way we generate energy is inefficient and damaging to the environment. To address these issues, updating the grid and using smart technologies is critical.

Sustainability-conscious electrical engineers support the use of the grid to distribute energy across many buildings while reducing inefficiencies and energy waste. Still, solutions like solar grids are not being used on a large scale.

It is clear that there is still a long way to go to achieve widespread energy efficiency. Using the grid is one way to get closer to this goal and help us enjoy a clean, green energy future.

Why use the grid?

The grid has a lot to offer, especially when we consider finding ways to use power design to reduce the rate of energy consumption.

There are obvious problems with running our energy business as usual, but the good news is that new technology can solve it. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) said, "Our current grid was built decades ago to transmit electricity from large, centralized power plants, most of which use dirty resources such as coal and natural gas."

However, this structure is becoming obsolete in the face of new energy sources. UCS continued: “…(new) technologies are rendering this method of power transmission and its supporting infrastructure increasingly obsolete. Today, electricity comes from more sources – including rooftop solar, wind and battery storage – And the grid needs to keep up with the progress we've made."

New ways to design grids to accommodate new energy sources can change a lot. There are many benefits to using a smart grid. According to UC Riverside:

A smart grid is a modern generation, transmission and distribution system that automates and manages the growing complexity and demands of electricity in the 21st century. The technology is designed to: integrate and support renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro; provide consumers with real-time information about their energy consumption; and assist utilities in reducing power outages.

Why we haven't seen a larger solar grid

Energy is a business no matter how you look at it. If large-scale solar grids take off and become widely used, traditional power companies could end up losing a lot of money. More money into green power supply from sources such as wind and solar could spell the end of the coal and oil era.

While some of our energy problems can be solved with sustainable electrical engineering, there are other barriers to large-scale solar grids. A large part of the current industrial energy system is old and obsolete, and outdated components are not maintained properly and often waste energy. The industrial energy waste from friction is considerable. Fixing this problem requires a major update and new equipment — and it comes at a price.
