At the EDA industry development sub forum of 2020 world semiconductor conference, LV Penghao, a consultant analyst of CCID, introduced that China’s EDA market in 2019 will reach about US $580 million, accounting for only 5.6% of the global market. The total revenue of China’s EDA manufacturers is less than 420 million yuan, accounting for only 0.6% of the global market share; the localization rate of China’s EDA is about 10%.
In the international market, the global EDA market will reach 10.25 billion US dollars in 2019. The EDA market presents an oligopoly situation, which is mainly divided up by Synopsys, cadence and mentor. More than 85% of the domestic EDA market is also occupied by the three major manufacturers.
LV Penghao pointed out that the current situation of domestic EDA is: the support of advanced technology is not enough, and it has not entered the alliance of advanced foundry. Due to the lack of core tool modules for digital chip design and the inability to support the whole process design, China’s EDA development is faced with serious shortage of EDA talent supply, insufficient industrial ecology, poor application environment, and weak combination of EDA manufacturers and advanced technology.
At the above forum, LV Penghao introduced that in 2019, the global EDA market rose from US $9.69 billion in 2018 to US $10.25 billion, breaking through the US $10 billion mark for the first time. EDA industry has a large scale, low overall growth rate, and the fastest growth rate in Asia Pacific region. EDA market is oligopoly, which is basically divided up by Synopsys, cadence and mentor.
He introduced that the development of EDA can be divided into three stages: CAD stage in the 1970s, CAE stage in the 1980s, and EDA stage in the 1990s. At present, EDA software is still constantly updated and iterated under the promotion of Moore’s law.
According to the calculation and analysis of a professor at the University of California, if the cost of a system SOC is about 40 million US dollars, without EDA technology progress, the cost will reach 7.7 billion US dollars, EDA software can reduce the design cost by 200 times.
On the current situation of China’s EDA development, LV Penghao introduced that China’s EDA had missed the golden period of development because of import dependence.
He said that before the 1980s, the Paris Coordination Committee imposed an embargo on China, and foreign EDA could not enter China. Panda system, a domestic EDA tool, was launched in 1988 and officially released in 1991. In 1994, the foreign countries cancelled the embargo on China, because of the dependence on imports, EDA autonomy entered a quiet period. In 2008, EDA software set sail again, established Huada Jiutian, core vision and other enterprises, and set up a major project of nuclear high-tech EDA.
By 2019, China’s EDA manufacturers are gradually recognized by the world. But at present, the market share of domestic EDA is still low.

He pointed out that there are still some dilemmas in the development of China’s EDA, including the serious shortage of EDA talent supply, the lack of industrial ecology, the bad application environment, and the weak combination of EDA manufacturers and advanced technology.
In terms of EDA talent supply, there are about 1500 people doing EDA R & D in China. Except for those who work in China R & D center of international EDA companies, there are only about 500 local EDA R & D personnel.
In terms of industrial ecology and application environment, many companies have been using foreign software for a long time, and dare not easily try domestic software. In addition, many small and medium-sized enterprises have poor awareness of copyright and intellectual property rights, and piracy is rampant, which is not good for domestic EDA iteration.
In addition, the domestic EDA manufacturers are relatively lack of PDK foundation, the cooperation between EDA enterprises and international advanced Fabs is weak, and the level of domestic fabs to improve their own manufacturing technology is limited.
