At the “GSMA thrive · everything Shenghui” Internet of things forum held yesterday, enterprise experts including the three major operators and Huawei were optimistic about the development prospect of mobile Internet of things in the future. It is generally believed that under the catalysis of 5g, mobile Internet of things will help all industries realize comprehensive digital transformation and upgrading by enabling thousands of industries and industries, and will usher in broader development prospects.
Mobile Internet of things enters a new stage
The Internet of things is considered to be a universal form in the 5g era. Since the rise of the mobile Internet of things for more than a decade, it has been in a state of gradual development. The mobile Internet of things based on 2G and other technologies can only be promoted in limited industries. However, with the rise of 5g, cloud computing, AI and other new technologies, especially under the background of the wide adoption of Nb IOT and LTE technologies, the mobile Internet of things has made rapid development in the past two years. At present, Nb IOT has reached the connection scale of 100 million. At the end of January this year, Nb IOT had more than 100 million global connections and China had more than 100 million connections at the end of February.
As the main access technology of mobile Internet of things in recent two years, Nb IOT has been widely used and deployed in all walks of life. In China, Nb IOT has become the mainstay of traditional industries. The number of smart water and smart gas connections has steadily moved forward to 20 million, and began to develop in depth from meter reading to pipe network monitoring and other industries. With the gradual withdrawal of 2G and 3G networks, the traditional IOT head application is actively transforming to 5g NB IOT. 2G head service POS machine, shared bicycle, vehicle tracking, etc. have completed the scheme verification, and realized the superior performance beyond 2G. Emerging applications such as door magnetism, infrared temperature measurement, vehicle finance, gas alarm, charging socket and so on have been put on the market one after another. NB IOT meters have also sprung up recently, with nearly one million connections deployed in China.
The three major domestic operators are actively deploying NB IOT. China Telecom has clearly announced that it has completed 97.8% Nb IOT network coverage and will develop 60 million new IOT access targets this year; China Mobile is expected to develop 70 million NB IOT connections as a whole this year, covering more than 40 industries; China Unicom is expected to contact more than 20000 IOT industry companies. At present, it has developed about 200 million IOT connections.
It is worth mentioning that the development of Nb IOT overseas has shown a prairie fire. Bidding for electricity meters in Saudi Arabia is 10 million, of which more than half will use NB IOT; The three major Swedish energy companies have adopted NB IOT technology and will complete the replacement of millions of meters in the next few years; Italgas, Italy, said that Nb IOT has achieved an online connection rate of more than 97% in areas where 2G signal coverage is unreachable, and announced that it will replace one million gas meters in 2020; Deutsche Telekom, Swiss Telecom, telia and Vodafone jointly signed a roaming protocol based on Nb network in 18 European countries to jointly build and share network connection technology; Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Italy, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Australia, South Korea, Japan, Brazil and other countries have actively carried out NB IOT business.
The vice president of Huawei’s wireless product line introduced that at present, there are 94 NB IOT commercial networks in more than 60 countries around the world. By 2022, the compound growth rate of Nb IOT will reach 150%, the connection scale in China will reach 400 million, and the development of Nb IOT has entered a fast lane. In terms of direction, from the current development situation, the development of mobile Internet of things has completed the initial accumulation, and the scale breakthrough has entered a new stage. Chen Haifeng, general manager of China Unicom Internet of things Co., Ltd., also holds the same view. He believes that with the implementation of China’s “new infrastructure” strategy and the further acceleration of 5g network construction, the mobile Internet of things has entered a new stage of cross-border integration, integrated innovation and large-scale development from fragmented application and closed-loop development.
Policy assistance and technology support
In terms of commercial progress, compared with other 5g applications, the mobile Internet of things business represented by NB IOT, as a 5g pioneer, has taken the lead in large-scale deployment. A large number of tens of millions of successful applications have been commercially verified and have the conditions for large-scale replication and promotion. It can be said that Nb IOT’s 100 million connection scale, its mature industrial chain and successful business practice provide a full connection foundation for 5g industry application and all things Zhilian, and play a good demonstration role. This also makes the industry full of greater expectations for the future development of mobile animal networking, and actively promote relevant policies, industrial ecology, technical standards and application deployment, which will make mobile animal networking to a higher level in the future.
In terms of policy, the development of mobile Internet of things has been highly valued and supported. The implementation of the “new infrastructure” strategy has brought the development of mobile Internet of things into a new stage. In addition, the notice of the general office of the Ministry of industry and information technology on further promoting the all-round development of the mobile Internet of things (hereinafter referred to as the notice) recently issued by the Ministry of industry and information technology has further promoted the rapid development of the mobile Internet. The notice clearly points out that we should accurately grasp the evolution trend of global mobile Internet of things technical standards and industrial pattern, promote the migration and network transfer of 2G / 3G Internet of things services, and establish a mobile Internet of things integrated ecosystem with the coordinated development of Nb IOT, 4G (including lte-cat1) and 5g. Driven by this policy, operators also adjust their strategies and make every effort to develop the mobile Internet of things based on cellular technology. China Mobile has recently made it clear that it will stop adding 2G Internet of things users by the end of 2020 and will undertake 2G Internet of things users by NB IOT and LTE CAT1 / 1bis technology. Meanwhile, in order to speed up the improvement of Nb IOT network coverage and accelerate the transfer of 2G Internet of things business to NB IOT network, China Mobile will build 118000 NB IOT base stations nationwide in 2020, reaching 350000 base stations in total. Policy support and guidance have pressed the fast forward key for the development of the mobile Internet of things. All provinces, cities and industries responded positively and issued relevant policies and plans one after another to vigorously support the development of mobile Internet of things.
Ecologically, the price of Nb IOT module continues to decline, approaching the level of 2G module, and the industrial chain is mature from end to end. In a recent centralized procurement bidding, the price of Nb IOT module has been reduced to less than 15 yuan, helping industrial development and positive business cycle. NB IOT is the general trend of accelerating forward. In the field of Nb IOT chips, major chip manufacturers are actively launching NB IOT. The hisilica 200 will be commercially available in the fourth quarter of this year. Qualcomm has released a global version of Nb IOT single-mode chips, and Ziguang zhanrui will release Nb2 only chip 8811 chips in the second half of this year. In addition, Shanghai mobile core, core wing and MediaTek have clear development plans for NB IOT chips. In terms of Nb IOT modules, Shanghai Yiyuan, the world’s largest module manufacturer, will produce 35 million modules this year, one third of which will be sent to the world. At the same time, manufacturers of Nb IOT modules, including lilda, Youfang and Qijun, are also fully invested in module R & D and production. Driven by the whole industrial ecology and optimized in the past two to three years, the cost of Nb IOT module has approached the cost of 2G module, which will greatly promote the development of mobile Internet of things industry.
From the perspective of technology evolution, Nb IOT was selected by 3GPP as one of the candidate technologies (5g or 5g mmtc) in July 2019. NB IOT will officially become a part of 5g technology released by ITU in 2020. At present, Nb IOT has reached R14, and the future will be planned based on R15, R16 and R17. The performance of R14 exceeds 2G in all aspects. The architecture of R15 and R16 is integrated with 5g. R17 is expected to further significantly improve the peak rate and mobility. In terms of direction, the future technologies of the Internet of things based on the cellular Internet of things are mainly composed of Nb IOT, lte-cat1, lte-cat4 and ultra wideband IOT technology based on 5g NR, in which NB IOT, lte-cat1 and lte-cat4 will account for 90% of the overall volume. At present, the network capability of Nb IOT based on R14 protocol will be greatly improved, which can be commercialized on a large scale. The performance experience has comprehensively exceeded 2G, especially in terms of spectrum efficiency, experience, delay and air interface security. The broadband connection technology based on lte-cat1 and lte-cat4 will continue to develop rapidly and stably in the vehicle, sharing economy and wearable industries.
The future can be expected to enable thousands of industries
With the maturity of technology and the strengthening of industrial policies, the development of mobile Internet of things will enter a new stage, taking advantage of 5g to help various industries realize comprehensive digital transformation and upgrading.
The direction believes that the intergenerational migration of cellular Internet of things connection has begun, and Nb IOT, LTE and 5g will form a stepped coverage. In the future connection of mobile Internet of things, Nb IOT, lte-cat1, lte-cat4 and 5g NR will coexist in different scenarios for a long time. The direction believes that in the technology migration, the on-board and shared single vehicle services, water meter, electricity meter and other monitoring services, intelligent payment, POS and other services will be migrated to the narrowband IOT technology supported by NB IOT. Camera, industrial manufacturing and other services with greater requirements for transmission bandwidth will migrate to broadband IOT technology dominated by lte-cat1 and lte-cat4.

At present, 5g network construction is further accelerated, cloud computing, big data and other industries are booming, and AI is gradually applied to all walks of life. The integration of new technologies and new facilities enables the Internet of things to enter more vertical fields and empower related fields.
Qiao Hui, general manager of China Mobile Internet of things Co., Ltd., said that it is in this environment that China Mobile Internet of things has the courage to expand its Internet of things business and provide partners with all-round Internet of things support services at the edge of the cloud network. “At present, we mainly focus on the five fields of intelligent connection, open platform, chip module, intelligent hardware and industrial application. At the same time, we actively forge 5g general capabilities such as 5g chip, edge computing, 5g module and operating system to enable the digital transformation of the industry.”
