2019 is the “first year” of 5G commercial use. Many countries, including South Korea and China, have successively announced the start of 5G commercial use this year. Since 2020, the global 5G construction speed has continued to accelerate, especially in China, where the epidemic has been stably controlled, the number of newly opened 5G base stations has exceeded 690,000, laying a solid foundation for further promoting 5G commercial use.
At present, with the continuous increase in the number of 5G base stations, the coverage of 5G networks is also rapidly increasing. According to the Ericsson Mobility Market Report, by the end of 2020, 5G will cover more than 1 billion people worldwide, accounting for 15% of the total global population. By 2026, 5G will cover 60% of the world’s population, and the number of 5G subscribers will reach 3.5 billion. Judging from this data, in just two years, the coverage of 5G networks has formed a significant scale.
From a global perspective, 5G construction in East Asia and North America is relatively fast, followed by Europe, Southeast Asia and other regions. Industry insiders believe that with China, South Korea and other countries achieving advanced 5G commercial use, Europe, where deployment is lagging behind, is expected to become the main source of growth for 5G base station construction in 2021 and the next two years. It is expected that by 2025, the development of 5G in China, South Korea, the United States, Japan, and many countries in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East will enter a preliminary stage of maturity.
Of course, the continuous acceleration of 5G construction has made the population covered by the 5G network grow rapidly, and the number of contracted users has continued to rise, but the coverage of the 5G network does not mean that the 5G signal can be used stably and efficiently, and signing a 5G package does not mean that you can enjoy full 5G commercial experience in the sense. For now, countries still have a way to go in improving the coverage integrity and stability of 5G networks.
In the future, after solving the existing problems, with the increasingly perfect 5G network coverage and the increasingly mature market system, 5G mobile phones, VR/AR, cloud games, ultra-high-definition video, etc. are expected to become the main scenarios of 5G commercial use, and the 5G industry will usher in a real prosper.
