In 2021, 5g smartphones are expected to account for 35% of the total smartphone sales
According to the latest prediction of Gartner, the world’s leading information technology research and consulting company, the total sales of global smartphone end users will reach 1.5 billion units in 2021, with a year-on-year increase of 11.4%.
Anshul Gupta, senior research director of Gartner, said: “consumers will reduce their spending on smartphones in 2020, but the release of new products will greatly increase user demand in 2021. The late smartphone upgrade and the release of low-end 5g smartphones will drive smartphone sales in 2021. ” Gartner analysts expect smartphone sales in 2021 to be close to 2019 levels.
Mobile phone sales in 2020 dropped by 10.5% due to COVID-19’s impact on the industry. Smartphone sales are expected to pick up in 2021. Mature markets in the Asia Pacific region, Western Europe and Latin America are expected to show the strongest growth between 2020 and 2021 (see Table 1).

5g is the next growth point of smart phones
With the continuous popularization of 5g network and the increasing variety of 5g smart phones with a starting price of $200, the demand of mature markets and Chinese markets will be stimulated. Consumers want to buy smartphones with higher configuration and 5g network function, which will drive the demand of emerging countries. Gartner predicts that the global total sales of 5g smart phones will reach 539 million in 2021, accounting for 35% of the total sales of smart phones in 2021 (see Table 2).

Mr Gupta said: “5g has become the standard feature of high-end smart phones, especially in the United States, China, Japan and South Korea. Driven by low-cost models, 5g smart phones are particularly popular in China. In 2021, the market share of 5g smart phones in China will reach 59.5%. In addition, low-end 5g smartphones are increasingly popular outside China, which will enhance the growth momentum of 5g smartphones in all regions in 2021. “
