Last week, the U.S. patent and Trademark Office released Samsung’s two latest patent applications for its future enhanced / virtual glasses. The first patent is the most interesting because it describes a snap on smart eyeglass using a magnetic system. This patent may be inspired by one or more apple patents. Therefore, this is a market competition.
The US Patent Office (USPTO) last week released its first Samsung patent application for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) glasses under development. The advantage of the invention is that Samsung has developed a simple method to place the vision correction lens in the intelligent glasses, which can be magnetically attached to the spectacle frame.
Samsung’s invention provides augmented reality display glasses, which provide relatively high wearing comfort compared with the prior art augmented reality display devices, and include a vision correction lens coupled in a way that reduces the volume of the augmented reality display device.
Samsung’s patent Figure 1 is a 3D view of an augmented reality display device 100 including a vision correction lens. Because the first vision correction lens and the second vision correction lens (124 and 134) are set, the augmented reality image provided by the device is accurately focused on the user’s retina, so the user wearing the corrective glasses can clearly see the augmented reality image provided by the device.

Compared with Samsung, apple applied for a series of patents (01, 02 and 03) related to the prescription lens system specially designed for HMD earlier. The fourth Apple patent released in July 2020 specifically provides pop-up prescription lenses for smart glasses.
Apple pointed out in the specific patent: “one display element can provide optical correction (prescription), while another display element can provide different optical correction or no optical correction. The following patent figures illustrate the embedded or clip on prescription lenses. It can be used for smart glasses. “
Last week, the U.S. trademark and patent office also released Samsung’s second patent application, which also involves the development of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) glasses. Wearable electronic devices for augmented reality technology enable users to see two virtual graphics mixed with real objects.
According to Samsung, AR / VR glasses designed to provide consumers with higher brightness and / or clearer images have been constructed. In the patent, the reflection pattern can be arranged on a plurality of layers or surfaces. In this way, the amount of light reflected by the reflection pattern can be increased, thereby improving the brightness of the image.
In addition, since the reflection pattern is arranged on a plurality of layers or surfaces, the area of the image display area can be increased. In addition, even when the size of the reflection pattern is reduced to make the image clearer, the brightness of the image can be compensated by increasing the number of reflection patterns.
Samsung’s patent Figure 1 shows AR / VR glasses, which can include a light transmission unit in the form of a transmission part 100, a first reflector in the form of a first reflection pattern (200), and a second reflector in the form of a second reflection pattern (300). A display unit (400) in the form of a display component and a coupler (500) in the form of a vulnerable component.
The first reflection pattern and the second reflection pattern (200 and 300) may include at least one of metal or metal material. For example, the first and second reflection patterns may include metals (E. G., gold, silver, aluminum) or alloys of metals.
