On August 26, according to foreign media reports, scientists from Pennsylvania State University in the United States published a new study in nature energy, revealing a lithium battery protective layer technology, which will bring higher battery capacity and safety.

Lithium metal battery is a new generation of battery after lithium ion battery, which can reduce the volume of current lithium battery by half, and the energy density will be higher. However, there are some problems such as the generation of lithium dendrite, low efficiency and low cycle life.

Researchers found that lithium battery protective layer technology will bring higher battery capacity and safety

Replacing copper and graphite anodes with pure lithium anodes can not only produce batteries with capacity up to 10 times, but also charge much faster. However, the lithium dendrite is one of the main problems hindering this technology.

In order to solve the problem of lithium dendrite in lithium metal batteries, scientists at Penn State University have found a feasible way to design a protective layer by using nanotube film and acoustic technology to improve the life of lithium metal batteries.

The layer consists of electrochemically active molecules deposited on the copper film. When the battery is charged, the lithium contact with the protective layer can activate this process, so as to protect the battery from lithium dendrite.

The protective layer will provide a good solid electrolyte interface during charging and protect the anode of lithium battery, the researchers said. It can be used in drones, cars, or some very small batteries for underwater applications at low temperatures.
