In order to solve the problem of lithium dendrite in lithium metal batteries, scientists at Penn State University have found a feasible way to design a protective layer by using nanotube film and acoustic technology to improve the life of lithium metal batteries.
The layer consists of electrochemically active molecules deposited on the copper film. When the battery is charged, the lithium contact with the protective layer can activate this process, so as to protect the battery from lithium dendrite.
The protective layer will provide a good solid electrolyte interface during charging and protect the anode of lithium battery, the researchers said. It can be used in drones, cars, or some very small batteries for underwater applications at low temperatures.
