The existing touch conductive materials are not suitable for large-size screens, because the larger the screen size is, the more data processing will be needed, so the requirements for impedance value will also be improved. When the size is larger than 14 inches, the use of ITO is limited, and alternative materials such as metal mesh, nano silver, carbon nanotubes, graphene and so on are paid attention to, Among them, metal mesh and silver nanowires are the most promising alternative materials for mass production.

Principles and limitations of metal mesh touch technology

Metal mesh has excellent conductivity, which can achieve the breakthrough of single-layer and multi-point on-cell in large size. It is believed that metal mesh touch technology will have the opportunity to become one of the mainstream touch technologies for large-size applications. In the touch market of medium and large size, the topic of transparent conductive film (TCF) replacing Ito is quite hot recently, At present, silver nanowires (Ag NW) and metal mesh are the most “close” commercial alternatives for ITO. If the traditional ITO conductive layer can be replaced by metal mesh, the resistance will be lower and the conductive layer will be thinner. Metal mesh technology is expected to further enhance the cost performance advantage of film touch screen.

Earlier, thin-film touch panel was considered to have a lot of noise interference problems when it was used for large-size products. However, in order not to be excluded from the trend of large-size touch applications, manufacturers of thin-film touch panel actively sought for a new generation of solutions, so they found metal mesh. Metal mesh is a new conductive material, touch sensor technology, to replace the traditional ITO film.

Due to the mature and cost-effective application of thin-film touch technology in small-scale applications, metal mesh has been set by suppliers to focus on the large-scale application market above 11.6 inches, including notebook computers, all in one integrated computer and other products, and a few of them will be used in tablet computers.

Principles and limitations of metal mesh touch technology

In the process of metal mesh, silver bromide is coated on the film first, then exposed by yellow light process, washed by silver, and finally the metal mesh of silver is obtained. Recently, manufacturers have invested in roll to roll roll process development. Roll to roll production of metal mesh in the production process will face the problem of broken line (especially in the silver washing stage), broken line position dispersion will greatly reduce the yield of finished products.

At present, the first problem is that the yield of metal mesh is not stable, the second is that there are few enterprises with the ability to mass produce metal mesh touch panel, and the third is that the cost will increase when the metal mesh solution is combined with LCD panel.
