As a global well-known manufacturer of electronic components and solutions, Murata production Institute (hereinafter referred to as “Murata”) timely launched UHF RFID tags specially designed and manufactured for this application, providing unique products for standardizing the construction of unique identification system for medical surgical instruments, strengthening the life cycle management of surgical instruments, and helping the development of medical Internet of things in China.
UDI refers to the code composed of numbers, letters or symbols attached to the medical device product or package, which is used to uniquely identify the medical device. In the field of surgical instruments UDI identification technology, the traditional laser and micro impact identification have their limitations. Corrosion and reading efficiency problems have been plaguing and restricting the development of unique identification of surgical instruments. For example, corrosion can lead to wound infection, equipment wear, signs disappear and other issues. In the process of cleaning and sterilization, the smooth surface caused by acid-base cleaning and sterilization solution forms specular reflection, which also brings about the problem that it cannot be read.
To solve this problem, Murata developed RFID tags for surgical instruments. The RFID tag is a new type of metal resistant UHF RFID tag. It uses the metal surface of the object as the booster of the antenna. Through the cooperation with Nanjing langdengjie Medical Technology Co., Ltd., it adopts a special fixing method to fix it on the surgical instruments with high strength, and can withstand more than IP 65 grade impact, surface adhesion passed the German TUV and China medical device inspection center biocompatibility compliance test of biofilm. This product can read the information in batch in the closed-loop circulation of surgical instruments for efficient management, even if the surface is covered with blood or wet instruments after pre-invasive bubbles can read.
The special packaging of Murata surgical instruments with RFID tags can withstand the high-temperature and high-pressure sterilization, cleaning and disinfection, acid-base corrosion and other use environment that reusable medical devices need to experience in daily life. Moreover, it has good metal resistance, which makes the reading and recognition in stacking, shielding, humid and other scenarios still efficient and reliable. Murata’s product is only 6 x 2 x 2.3 mm in volume, which can be attached to most surgical instruments due to its small volume. It is a UHF RFID tag with small size and powerful performance in similar applications.
RFID technology has the advantages of long identification distance, short reading time, high accuracy and large amount of data storage. In the closed-loop management process of surgical instruments recovery, cleaning, packaging, sterilization, storage and distribution, and use, RFID technology can provide batch mode, reduce workload and save working hours. At the same time, according to foreign advanced management experience, the fine management of surgical instruments, combined with SPD, can bring accurate and efficient cost management, from procurement to amortization, from procurement to depreciation of fixed assets, which can save a lot of indirect operating costs for the hospital.
In addition, RFID technology is an important member of the perception layer of the Internet of things. Thanks to this feature, the UDI provided by Murata surgical instruments with RFID tags can support the workflow driven operation activities as the core, coordinate and optimize the operation cooperation, and improve the safety and efficiency of hospital work.
Zhang Meng, senior market engineer in the market & Business Development Department of Murata (China) Investment Co., Ltd., said that the medical field is one of the fields that Murata attaches great importance to in 2019. With the synchronous launch of FDA, CE MDR and the unique identification of medical device UDI of China food and drug administration, an emerging market demand is booming. At the same time, these unique identifications of UDI are also an application opportunity of the medical Internet of things. As a professional and ingenious manufacturer of the perception layer of the Internet of things, Murata will provide more and more products and solutions to support and assist the application and development of the medical Internet of things.
