Because the service that first broke out in 5g era should be ultra high definition video, which belongs to large bandwidth service. If it is processed at the edge, it will reduce the occupation of backbone network resources; for some services that require low delay, if the service is placed at the edge, it will shorten the end-to-end delay.

As Wu Hequan, academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering, said in the “new ten questions” of edge computing, MEC’s location is relatively flexible. For example, in mobile communication network, MEC can be at the edge of Du, Cu and CN; in industrial enterprises, MEC can be set inside the enterprise together with the base station, that is, UPF is in the enterprise, but network signaling can still be used for security authentication and control in the core network, and data can not be sent out of the enterprise; In the operator, it can also be set at the edge of its core network, no matter whether the base station is inside the enterprise or not; Ott service providers define any node between the terminal / data source and the cloud computing center path as MEC landing point, which can be pure software form or integrated middleware hardware gateway.

At present, the three operators are using their own network and data center advantages to develop MEC, so as to promote the continuous implementation of 5g.

Of course, 5g + MEC is not only a certain technology and a certain platform, but also a system engineering. To promote the development of 5g + MEC, we need to understand the needs of vertical industry, support diversified application scenarios, enrich 5g terminal forms, and promote cloud network integration and cloud edge collaboration. This requires multi-party cooperation in the industrial chain to promote the mature development of the industry.

China Unicom: MEC takes the lead

In the view of China Unicom, MEC construction is an important strategy to develop 5g, 2b / 2C high-value business, and also the key to build an integrated service capability of “cloud, management, end, edge and industry”.

In April this year, China Unicom’s MEC operation center was established in Guangdong. In Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai and other core cities in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, China Unicom took the lead in completing the overall layout and node construction of 5gmec network. Based on the scale of MEC business network, China Unicom has launched MEC business practice with dozens of leading enterprises such as Gree, Tencent and country garden.

The pilot project of MEC business in Guangdong is only a miniature of China Unicom’s five digit collaborative system of “cloud, network, edge, end and industry” (cloud computing, intelligent network, MEC edge cloud, pan terminal and innovative business). At the same time of establishing MEC national operation center in Guangdong, MEC innovation business incubation bases have been established in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jilin and other places to enable the application of a little innovation and the whole network replication.

At the same time, with MEC as the anchor point, build an intelligent network of “network moves with the cloud, cloud network integration”. In 2020, China Unicom will complete the construction of thousands of edge nodes in key cities in China.

At present, the MEC platform independently developed by China Unicom has been commercially launched nationwide to meet the differentiated innovation needs of 5g industry.

In addition, China Unicom has carried out edge cloud cooperation with more than 400 customers and partners, covering eight fields such as “intelligent manufacturing”, “intelligent medical treatment”, “intelligent transportation” and “intelligent park”, and nearly 100 MEC commercial projects. In addition, China Unicom also established “mobile edge computing ecological laboratory” with Intel and other partners.

China Telecom: 5g + MEC smart business digital twin platform in “radiation”

Last year, China Telecom released its own MEC platform to provide network service integration and third-party management capabilities. This year, China Telecom has achieved some phased results in the key technologies of 5g mec (edge computing) and 5g slicing. The self-developed edge computing (MEC) system and slicing management system have been pre commercially deployed in the existing network.

On June 5, 2020, in xiong’an new area, China Telecom and ZTE successfully built the first city level application edge computing node in China, that is, vehicle road collaboration in green intelligent transportation pilot zone, which is also the first successful practice of cloud network integration in the scene of Internet of vehicles.

In addition, it also released 5g + MEC smart business digital twin platform, which is the first entity business 5g digital capability base and open ecological enabling platform jointly built by China Telecom and its Haobai holdings.

It is reported that the 5g + MEC smart business digital twin platform relies on China Telecom 5gsa cloud network integrated architecture, and based on the independently developed edge computing platform and core capabilities such as high-precision point cloud map, cloud rendering and cloud recognition, it has launched applications such as 5gxr digital landscape, XR digital marketing, cloud live broadcasting, AI big data passenger flow analysis, etc., which help the real business passenger flow to warm up, promote the expansion and quality of new consumption, Build a new digital experience marketing mode of online and offline integration.

At present, 5g + MEC smart business digital twin platform has been implemented in 24 provinces and cities, including Hefei Vientiane City, Beijing Xidan Joy City, Shanghai Zhengda Plaza, Chengdu Kuanzhai alley, Fuzhou Suning Plaza, Guangzhou Zhengjia Plaza, enabling more than 50 head commercial complexes, free trade port duty-free shops and surrounding hotels, commercial pedestrian streets, benefiting more than 6000 businesses, setting a benchmark for 5g enabled industry digital transformation.

China Mobile: 105 edge computing pilot projects

Recently, China Mobile and Huawei jointly completed the pilot of SPN based MEC intelligent bearer network, which proves that Huawei SPN bearer solution can support vertical industry MEC scale commercial deployment, and will provide a solid foundation for the rapid development of 5g2b business.

So far, China Mobile has constructed 105 edge computing pilot projects, covering 22 provinces, 15 sub industries, and launched more than 30 solutions for business oriented edge computing industry.

In addition, China Mobile has also carried out the top-level design of edge computing, launched three key platforms of ECM, ECP and ECI, and opened up two service systems: one is the network side cloud collaborative operation system, and the other is the network side cloud API scheduling system.
