4K resolution has become a mainstream of LCD TV panel market
According to the latest IHS largearea display market tracker large-scale shipment report, in July and August 2016, the shipment of 4K LCD TV panels reached the level of about 6 million in a single month, accounting for 26% and 24% of the LCD TV panel shipment in that month respectively. With the mutual promotion of the large-scale LCD TV market and the penetration of 4K TV, this proportion will be further enhanced in the future.
For example, according to the latest IHS large-size flat panel display product shipment forecast, this proportion is expected to exceed 30% in the fourth quarter of this year, and it is expected to further reach 35% in the second quarter of next year. Therefore, after HD, FHD and other resolutions, 4K resolution has become a mainstream of LCD TV panel market, which is an indisputable fact.
With the evolution of the market, the pursuit of higher specification and higher resolution products in the flat panel display industry is far from stopping. In recent industry exhibitions, such as IFA in Germany, 4K products from various manufacturers emerge in an endless stream, but more and more 8K products begin to appear in all kinds of booths, and begin to enter everyone’s vision. Some manufacturers, such as continental panel factory, even display 110 inch 10K panel products.
According to IHS largearea display product roadmap tracker, there are more than 40 8K panel products in production or research and development, with sizes ranging from 65 inches to 110 inches. This shows that everyone is very optimistic about the prospect of 8K panel products.
What are 8K and 10K panels?
Compared with 4K, the resolution is 3840×2160, the number of pixels of 8K panel is four times that of 4K panel, the resolution is 7680×4320, and the image aspect ratio is 16:9, which is also the most mainstream aspect ratio in the current TV market.
The 10K panel on display by BOE has a resolution of 10240×4320 and a depth to width ratio of 21:9, which is consistent with the depth to width ratio of cinema video signals. It aims to bring more vivid home theater experience to consumers.
Compared with 4K panel, 8K TV panel has higher pixel density (PPI), which is twice that of 4K panel of the same size. Therefore, in production, the requirements for manufacturing process and fine processing capacity are more critical, while 10K panel is further required.
Therefore, the production of 8K / 10K panel is particularly difficult, just as 4K panel manufacturers are faced with slow yield improvement and even occasionally poor yield due to process problems when they first enter the market.
Differences between 8K, 10K and 4K panels
The 8K panel requires that both the source drive and gate drive electrodes must be copper, so the process is more difficult than the common aluminum electrode for 4K panel. At present, only LGD technology is relatively mature in this aspect, while Samsung started comprehensive technical improvement in 2016, introducing all copper electrode manufacturing processes. Other panel manufacturers have more or less encountered no small problems in 8K panel copper electrode manufacturing process.
In addition, due to the large number of pixels and high pixel density of 8K panel, if you choose a smaller panel size, it will bring extra process difficulty because of the high pixel density. Therefore, we can see that the current minimum size of 8K panel is 65 inches, and the pixel density reaches 136 PPI; while the vast majority of 8K panel products choose 75 inch, 85 inch or even super large size panels such as 98 inch / 110 inch.
The manufacturing process of super large panel itself is a complex process, which has high technical requirements for manufacturing capacity. Large size, high pixel density, how to control the display image quality, such as brightness, contrast, consistency and so on, are not small challenges for the production enterprises.
However, it seems a little premature to say that 8K / 10K is the “ultimate technology” or “resolution peak” of the panel. Although the current flat panel display industry has a huge scale, the pace of technological progress has never stopped, especially the panel manufacturers represented by domestic enterprises BOE, have been tireless in the pursuit of higher resolution products. With the mass production of the 10.5g11 generation production lines of BOE and csot in the future, the possibility of pursuing higher resolution products is still very high on the basis of having larger LCD TV panel production capacity.
8K panel will enter the channel of rapid growth in 2019
However, although panel manufacturers and TV brand manufacturers are very active in 8K products, it still needs a very long-term industrial development and accumulation for 8K products to really enter the mainstream market. For example, although the current 4K products have become the mainstream of the market, but the vast majority of television broadcast network systems can not support the broadcast of 4K content.
At present, only Japan’s NHK cooperates with BOE in the production and trial broadcasting of 8K content. Since 2015, some positive attempts have been made in the Japanese market, and some trial recording and broadcasting have been carried out for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games.
Therefore, although we are still very optimistic about the prospect of 8K products, we expect that it will be at least two to three years before 8K products really start to make a big impact in the market. Under the current situation, 8K products are expensive and expensive, so it is necessary to wait for the technology to further mature and the product price to be more people-friendly, so that they can occupy a place in the market.
Based on this, and under the condition that the sales volume of 8K products in 2016 is less than 1000 sets, we expect that the sales volume of 8K TV will reach more than 300000 sets in 2018, and break through one million sets in 2019, and then enter the channel of rapid growth.
