Interface status 1: transmission bandwidth has become an obstacle to high-quality picture display

For example, when using hdmi1.4 interface to connect a 2K resolution and 165hz refresh rate E-sports display, the display can only display 2K resolution and 75Hz refresh rate images in sRGB color space.
If you sacrifice the color of the picture, in ycbcr4:2:0 color space, you can only bring up to 2K resolution 144hz refresh rate of the picture. In other words, due to the insufficient bandwidth of the display interface, the performance of the display panel can not be fully played.
At present, the 4K resolution display has reached the 1500 price range, and the price is no longer an obstacle. The number of color displays has also increased significantly, and displays with a color depth of 10bit are everywhere.
With the rapid development of panel performance, the bandwidth of display interface becomes more and more limited.
Interface status 2: HDMI interface of Dasheng
In previous articles, we know that DVI-D interface has been replaced by HDMI and DP interface due to its weak compatibility, low transmission bandwidth and inconvenient use.
At present, there are two versions of HDMI interface. The bandwidth of HDMI 1.4 is low, only 10.2gdps, and only 30 frames of 4K video can be played.
The bandwidth of HDMI 2.0 is higher, reaching 18gdps, and the frame rate of 4K video is increased to 60 frames.

The bandwidth of HDMI 2.0 alone can’t satisfy these performance monsters, but these devices still choose HDMI interface.

On the other side of the DP interface, the highest dp1.4 currently has only 32.4gbps bandwidth, which can’t be compared with HDMI 2.1.

And the DP interface is only used in the computer field. Compared with HDMI, which is used in flat-panel TV, set-top box, game console and digital camera, it has a big compatibility problem.
From the current point of view, it seems that HDMI interface takes the lead in all aspects and dominates the interface market. But the winner is still unknown, because there is still a big move for DP interface.
Transition: type-C interface
At present, the type-C interface provided on the display is based on dp1.4 protocol, which has many functions, such as charging, data transmission, audio and video signal transmission. Master everything.
Electronic devices launched in the past two years, such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and even power bank, small fans and other small objects will be equipped with this interface. It can be predicted that type-C will become the mainstream interface of electronic devices in the future.
If the form of DP interface becomes type-C in the future, only monitors, motherboards and graphics cards will be affected. But now DP interface computer special this inferiority, becomes the biggest superiority.
On the contrary, HDMI interface supports many devices, so it is not realistic to change the interface form easily.
