As we all know, in the field of chip design, EDA is a very important, and also the most upstream and high-end software product in IC design. All aspects.
And as today’s chips become more and more complex, and there are even tens of billions of transistors in a chip, it is basically impossible not to use EDA.
Recently, due to the upgrade of Huawei’s chip ban, domestic concerns about EDA have been raised. In fact, this is also true. At present, EDA products in the United States account for 65%+ of the global market, and 90% of the market share in China. Chip manufacturers such as Huawei and ZTE use American EDA products.
In the field of EDA, there are three major giants, namely Synopsys in the United States, Cadence in the United States, and MentorGraphics acquired by Siemens. Although MentorGraphics was acquired by Siemens, it is actually an American company, so these three giants can be said to be American companies. .
From the data in 2018, Synopsys’ global share has reached 32.1%; Cadence’s share is 22.0%; MentorGraphics’ share is about 11%, and the three major manufacturers together account for about 65%.
In the Chinese market, these three giants accounted for 90% of the share in 2018, and domestic chip manufacturers basically use the products of these three giants. As shown in the figure below, well-known domestic companies are inseparable from these three manufacturers. Like Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo and so on.
Among them, Synopsys’ products are the most comprehensive, but the main advantages are digital front-end, digital back-end and PTsignoff. The strength of Cadence lies in the customized circuit and layout design of analog or mixed signal, the function is very powerful, and the PCB is relatively strong. MentorGraphic is relatively strong in the back-end layout and routing, and it also has advantages on the PCB.
Therefore, most domestic semiconductor manufacturers use the products of these three companies for different scenarios, such as MentorGraphic for Huawei’s front-end, Synopsys for verification, and Cadence for PCB boards.
Of course, in the past ten years, domestic EDA manufacturers have also achieved great development. Several companies such as Huada Jiutian, Xinhe Technology, Guangliwei, and Bodawei have been baptized by the market and have a place in EDA. , but there is still a big gap from these three giants.
Now, with Huawei’s chip ban and upgrade, many people are paying attention to domestic EDA products, and they have begun to replace domestic products. I believe that we will usher in the development opportunities of domestic EDA.
