China, November 16, 2021 – Italy France semiconductor tcpp03-m20 USB type-C port protection IC is tailored for dual role power transmission (DRP) applications. Its design can be simplified for bidirectional charge and discharge products that can charge connected devices and accept other usb-c power supplies.

As the supporting chips of stm32g0 *, stm32g4, stm32l5 and stm32u5 microcontrollers with St UCPD (USB type-C and power delivery) interface IP modules, tcpp03-m20 allows designers to partition USB type-C interface hardware in an economic and cost-effective way to realize a dual chip solution with STM32 as the main microcontroller, so as to save BOM cost and reduce PCB board space, Reduce circuit complexity.

According to the definition of USB type-C specification, a usb-c dual role power transmission device, such as smart speakers, smart phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, etc., can dynamically change the power transmission role from power receiving to power transmission, and the USB data role from the device to the host, and vice versa. This enables new use cases for saving and sharing power between battery powered devices and extends device interoperability. The USB DRP function defined by the type-C specification allows any USB device with a built-in Italian French semiconductor chip to charge the battery of the connected device.

Tcpp03-m20 adopts BCD manufacturing process of Italian French semiconductor. This process has recently passed IEEE milestone certification. It can integrate logic circuits and high-voltage circuits on the same chip, improve integration and reliability, and realize ± 8Kv ESD protection (IEC61000-4-2 level 4), overvoltage and overcurrent protection on the same chip. These protection functions are essential to protect the equipment from accidental short circuit accident or connection failure, and comply with the usb-c power delivery technical specification. The chip integrates vconn and CC switches of usb-c port; Source and sink channel charge pumps with two n-channel MOSFET gate drivers; VBUS and vconn power path discharge circuit, and dead battery management.

Tcpp03-m20 optimizes ultra-low power performance and is specially designed for USB DRP use cases to ensure excellent energy efficiency of application devices. Tcpp01-m12 and tcpp02-m18 BCD IC of STMicroelectronics are independent power sink and power source solutions. Like all TCPP products of STMicroelectronics, tcpp03-m20 complies with the latest features of usb-c PD specification 3.1 standard power range (SPR), including PPS (programmable power supply).

STM32 nucleus expansion board x-nucleus-drp1m1 and x-cube-tcpp stm32cube expansion software and application code examples are now on the market, which helps to accelerate the development of up to 100W DRP application project based on tcpp03-m20. Developers can also take advantage of the UCPD configuration support of stm32cubemx, stm32g071b-disco usb-c sniffer and stm32cubemonitor UCPD debugging tool. The power sink power receiving development board x-nucleus-snk1m1 is now on the market, while the power source power transmission development board x-nucleus-src1m1 is planned to be released in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Tcpp03-m20 has been put into operation and is packaged with 4mm x 4mm vfqfpn20.
