Recently, the State Grid Corporation of China released the results of the second bidding for electric energy meters and power consumption information acquisition equipment in 2018. 63 enterprises won the bid, with a bid amount of 6.964 billion yuan, which attracted the attention of many domestic electricity meter enterprises.

The power industry is the basic energy industry of the national economy. With the development of social economy, the dependence of various industries on power has increased significantly, and the requirements for power supply reliability and power quality are increasing day by day.

In order to achieve the goal of reliable, safe, economic and efficient power grid and sustainable green development of economy and society, China formulated the smart grid development plan in July 2009. According to the plan, China will fully build a unified “strong smart grid” by 2020.

As one of the key terminal products of smart grid construction, smart meter and power consumption information acquisition system products play an important supporting role in realizing informatization, automation and intelligence of power grid. In recent years, the technical progress and rapid development of power industry and smart grid have driven the prosperity of China’s electric energy metering market. As the most important product of electrical instruments and meters in China, the output of smart meters has been at a high level, and leading enterprises represented by Weisheng group, Linyang energy, Ningbo Samsung Medical Electric, Yantai Oriental Weston electric and Haixing power have emerged, and have shown strong competitive strength in the State Grid bidding in recent years.

With the rapid growth of domestic smart grid investment, it is expected that 460 million smart meters will be added in China during the 13th Five Year Plan period, and the leading enterprises in the industry will continue to benefit in the future.

However, with the basic completion of the first round of smart meter replacement of the State Grid and the South grid, the market increment of China’s smart meter industry began to shrink day by day. With this, the competition among power meter enterprises began to further intensify and entered the white hot stage. In the second electricity meter bidding of State Grid in 2018, the ranking of 18 enterprises that won the bid continuously increased by different ranges, and the ranking of 25 enterprises decreased by different ranges, all indicating the fierce competition among electricity meter enterprises.

In the increasingly fierce market competition, how to seek a new market breakthrough is a problem that domestic watt hour meter enterprises must face and think about.

At present, countries around the world are committed to the planning and infrastructure construction of smart grid with the goal of stable and efficient power, energy conservation, environmental protection and safe use. The International Energy Agency estimates that the smart grid will cover 80% of the world’s population by 2020.

The construction of smart grid has brought broad market demand for global smart meters and power consumption information acquisition and processing system products. It is estimated that nearly 2 billion smart meters will be installed in the world by 2020, the smart grid will cover 80% of the world’s population, and the penetration rate of smart meters will reach 60%. This is a great opportunity for Chinese electric energy meter enterprises to explore the overseas market.

China is a large producer of electric energy meters. At present, the main products such as inductive electric energy meters, electronic electric energy meters and intelligent electric energy meters have reached or approached the technical standards of developed countries, and the production and R & D capacity has been able to meet the different needs of the international market. Moreover, the price advantage is obvious and has strong competitiveness in the world.

With the development of e-commerce and international trade, more and more domestic energy meter enterprises began to try to “go global”, and gained more and more market share in emerging smart meter market countries such as Asia, Africa and Latin America by virtue of technology and cost advantages. In June, Weisheng group and Haixing power won the “Bangladesh BREB smart watt hour meter project” of RMB 84 million and RMB 80 million respectively to provide prepaid smart watt hour meters and installation services for Bangladesh.

Therefore, domestic electric energy meter enterprises should not only pay attention to the competition in the domestic market, but also actively participate in the competition in the international market, actively introduce foreign advanced technology, operation and profit model, improve their own strength in combination with domestic advantageous resources, and realize the leapfrog development of enterprises through the common development of domestic and foreign markets
