It’s a great honor to be invited to attend this world VR industry conference, and have the honor to communicate with you here as an enterprise representative to jointly discuss the development trend and technological breakthrough and innovation of XR industry.

At Qualcomm, we believe that XR includes VR, AR and MR, which will be the next generation mobile computing platform. In recent two years, more and more industries and enterprises began to focus on XR industry, and the whole industry is ushering in a golden period of development. At the same time, XR has also become one of the key technologies of digital transformation and digital transformation; In addition, ordinary consumers also began to pay attention to XR and look forward to the immersive and interactive experience enabled by XR. People no longer have to bow their heads to get information through the two-dimensional screen of mobile phones and computers. As long as you wear glasses, virtual information can be superimposed on the real world seen through glasses. This vision of the integration of real world and virtual information will promote us to obtain information, communicate, navigate and work together in a new way.

It will take several years to fully transition from the current 2D display to spatial computing. However, compared with previous generations of technologies, spatial computing will have a more profound impact on people’s life. It can be said that the whole world will become people’s computer desktop, and the display screen is infinite.

Qualcomm has been deeply involved in the XR field for 10 years. We believe that XR will eventually reach a market scale equivalent to that of smart phones and is expected to have a more profound impact on the society.

Today, XR devices are mainly divided into two categories. The first type is XR all-in-one machine. We believe that in the next 1-4 years, the integration of VR and AR will become lighter, smaller and more powerful. The other is XR glasses, which has a slim product shape and can work with major computing units such as PCs and smartphones. Such devices will also evolve in the next 1-4 years.

With the continuous improvement of terminal computing power and the coordinated development of XR with 5g, edge cloud and AI technology, the product form of XR is also evolving and integrating. Wireless connection will replace wired connection. Part of the processing work is carried out in head display equipment, and most of the processing work is completed by smart phones and PCs. it is expected that the form of lightweight glasses can be realized in 5-10 years.

Lightweight XR glasses that are not bound by cables have many advantages. For example, they can not only view and run multiple programs and tasks at the same time, but also achieve low delay and excellent energy efficiency through advanced connection technologies such as 5g, and perfectly support immersive collaboration and streaming.

To continuously expand these advantages requires technological innovation and breakthroughs, and spatial computing and 5g are the core elements. On the one hand, the key to creating a real immersive XR experience is the integration of the real world and the digital world, which requires the introduction of a new interactive way, that is, spatial computing in the three-dimensional space of our life through XR technology. We believe that “spatial computing” is the future of computing. It refers to the current activities of users on mobile terminals, including sending messages, socializing, viewing maps, enjoying streaming media entertainment, playing games, etc., which will be mapped to users in 3D in the future. All these applications and content will be superimposed on the real world and presented to users through a lightweight headset XR device. On the other hand, 5g is also the key technology to promote the development of XR. Over the past decade, Qualcomm has made long-term and substantial investment in the research and development of cutting-edge technologies in the XR field, introduced our profound technology accumulation in the mobile field into the XR platform, and created Xiaolong XR1 and XR2 platforms specifically for XR devices.

At present, Xiaolong has enabled more than 45 XR devices, continuously injecting strong momentum into the development of XR industrial ecosystem.

A drop of water does not make a sea, but a single tree does not make a forest. To promote the development of XR industry, we must not rely on our own efforts, but the joint efforts of the whole industry ecosystem. We believe that “joint participation, cooperation and mutual benefit” will be the way for the prosperity and development of the whole XR ecosystem. To this end, we have adopted four strategies to help XR ecosystem develop and grow.

  • First of all, as just mentioned, we provide manufacturers with special chip platforms that can solve the technical problems of XR equipment. These XR platforms support many of the most advanced commercial terminals in the market
  • Secondly, we also created a reference design based on XR special platform to help partners take this as a blueprint to speed up the large-scale commercial use of terminals
  • In addition, we also provide software, spatial computing algorithms and architectures for some technical challenges in the XR field
  • Last but not least, we have launched a series of rich hardware and software ecosystem plans to enable partners to participate and reduce their burden in the process of product commercialization
