According to foreign media therelec, LG display, a leading OLED panel manufacturer, also plans to restart its OLED factory in Guangzhou this month, and the OLED panel capacity will be fully supplied.

Either of the two news is exciting news for the OLED TV industry, and their presence together is double happiness for the OLED TV camp. However, these news may have caused a certain blow to the quantum dot TV camp.

Quantum dots and OLED: Display Technology

Since the birth of quantum dot technology and OLED technology, the color TV industry has been debating about “who is the next generation display technology”. Under the leadership of their respective leading brands of display technology, the competition and friction between the two real technology camps are also protracted.

Technically, quantum dot technology is essentially an upgrade of liquid crystal screen. Only from the perspective of technical principle, both technologies are highly forward-looking and have their own advantages. It is difficult to distinguish the advantages and disadvantages. How to select the display technology for their own color TV products should also be based on the grasp and judgment of each manufacturer for the future market development.

Manufacturers enter the market one after another: OLED TV is becoming bigger

In the quantum dot camp, the Korean brand Samsung bears the brunt and vigorously touts quantum dot TV. In terms of domestic manufacturers, it is a large TCL brand. As a strong pillar of quantum dot TV, coupled with LETV, a belated Internet of things brand, these brands are basically the main brands of quantum dot TV. Although the amount is relatively small, the essence of concentration is quantum dot TV, which is also strong and can not be ignored in the market.

In terms of OLED camp, led by Korean leader LG, domestic Skyworth, Changhong and Konka also joined, and several brands basically constitute the backbone of OLED camp. However, in recent years, OLEDs have been increasingly favored by color TV manufacturers. In 2017, the Japanese giant Sony brand returned to the OLED camp, which is regarded as a sign of the “defection” of Japanese brands. Panasonic, Toshiba and other Japanese brands have also successively entered the environmental protection of the OLED camp. Until now, the entry of several “recruits” from Huawei and Xiaomi has further expanded the OLED camp. Although the strength comparison between quantum dots and OLED camp has not changed overwhelmingly, it is undeniable that OLED camp has become larger and stronger.

Battle and evolution: the battle for display technology continues

However, the dispute between quantum dots and OLED is essentially a selection process for the next generation of display technology in the market. It is not a team game. Whoever has more people will win. In essence, it still needs to decide the outcome through technology and products. Despite a long period of competition, both sides have hardly broken the balance of power and developed their own market. In the process of struggle, the technologies of both sides are constantly upgrading and evolving.

In the quantum dot camp, Samsung display proposed to stop the production of TV LCD panels at the end of this year and accelerate the transformation to QD display for the reasons of declining market demand for LCD and oversupply. Previously, foreign media reported that Samsung officially confirmed that it would put into operation the qd-oled panel equipped with quantum dot technology in 2021 and gradually replace OLED as the standard panel of the next generation of HD TV. It is understood that qd-oled can be regarded as a combination of quantum dots and OLED technology, and it is also regarded by Samsung as a high-end display technology in the next few years. Both belong to self luminescence. Qd-oled is enough to compete with OLED in display effect, but it perfectly overcomes all the shortcomings of OLED. If qd-oled panel is applied to quantum dot TV products, it will bring a leap in strength to the quantum dot camp.

The same changes are taking place in the OLED camp. In the early days of OLED, there were some shortcomings such as low yield, screen burning and short service life. However, with the improvement of manufacturing process, OLED panels are gradually overcoming the shortcomings of the past, and the output and yield are increasing. In addition, many manufacturers can also give full play to the advantages of thin OLED screen and good scalability to innovate OLED TV. Compared with the previous OLED wallpaper TV, it fully highlights the lightweight performance of OLED screen and realizes the perfect combination of art and products; Due to its excellent ductility, the screen of OLED TV can also be expanded to 88 inches, which is very shocking. In addition, there are special screen designs such as double-sided OLED and crimpable OLED, which can be said to be a good attempt.

From the perspective of technological development, both sides still have room for continuous development, and the color TV products of the two camps also have their own supporters. The technology is still evolving and the products are still upgrading.
