Huawei once launched Kunpeng 920 and Taishan server based on the processor on January 7, 2019. Under the overall situation of Sino US relations, there may be import substitution in the future.

The strength of Huawei Kunpeng. Huawei has made its own arm instruction set processor for a long time. Before the advent of the iPhone, Huawei Hisilicon had K3 processor, which was used by Shanzhai computers to produce cheap WM smartphones. Later, the rise of smart phones, Huawei mobile phones began to use their own k3v2 processor, and then developed into the Kirin series, until today’s Qilin 990.

On the SOC of mobile phones, Huawei Hisilicon has been able to keep up with the latest trend, and has cooperated with TSMC to manufacture mobile phone processors with good performance through the cooperation authorized by arm. With the development of mobile phone processor, Huawei also tries to use arm instruction set and arm core to develop server-side processor.

The original product was the core of a57, and then the core of A72. By Kunpeng 920, Hisilicon has been able to develop its own core architecture. The performance of Huawei’s core R & D has reached the level of arm public version A76, which is not easy. Although this performance is not powerful, it can be used in many places, because many requirements do not require so much single core computing power. The Kunpeng 920 can win by many, and gain advantages by performance power ratio.

Huawei’s opportunity lies in the cloud

Huawei also knows that without ecology, Huawei’s strategy is to build a chip family with five subsystems of “calculation, storage, transmission, management and intelligence” around Kunpeng processor.

Huawei will open the server motherboard and PC motherboard in the hardware field. In terms of software, Huawei will set up a openeuler.org Community, open source OS source code, and industry applications will improve the industry chain through industry alliance, open source community, OpenLab and industry standard organization. And the real opportunity is in the cloud. Under the premise of cloud computing, the user’s perception has nothing to do with what is used in the cloud.

For the end users, they have no sense of what to use in the cloud, as long as their clients are easy to use. In this way, we can avoid the problems caused by the lack of ecosystem.

It’s not easy to be a cloud. Huawei needs to solve the whole set of problems by itself, and make the needs of customers in a certain industry into an overall solution. This is a test of Huawei’s technical ability. At the same time, there is a cost problem for Huawei to make its own complete set. Huawei must have its own full set cheaper than the flexible combination of its competitors in order to be competitive in the market. This is another challenge for Huawei.

Huawei Kunpeng still has a long way to go to challenge Intel.
