On August 24, 2019, Jiefang L4 unmanned intelligent truck appeared in the third season of CCTV-1 large-scale science and technology challenge program “smart man”. It successfully responded to various scene challenges and showed the audience the automatic driving technology of Jiefang intelligent heavy truck. Since then, many enterprises have launched the layout of automatic driving related products and technologies based on their own actual situation.

In 2020, it is very important for the development of automatic driving industry. In February, the national development and Reform Commission and other departments jointly issued the “smart car innovation and development strategy”. The general office of the State Council also issued the “new energy automotive industry development plan (2021 – 2035)” recently, and proposed that after 15 years of continuous efforts, the highly automatic driving vehicle will be applied in a large scale.

How to promote the scale application of highly automatic driving vehicle?

In June 12th, in Dongfeng Technology Center trial workshop, the first fully self developed L4 class 5G automatic driving vehicle, Sharing-VAN, was officially released. This news has attracted the attention of the industry. Sharing-VAN is the first 5G L4 automatic driving vehicle to realize mass production and commercial operation in China. The first batch of 6 off-line sharing vans will be used in Qingdao National Marine Laboratory to carry out operation tasks such as transporting goods and carrying passengers in the park.

At the end of October, Daimler reached a cooperation with waymo, a global autopilot company, aiming at the mass production of L4 automatic driving heavy trucks. At the beginning of September this year, FAW Jiefang L3 J7 super truck was officially released and will be mass produced in 2021. Before that, China National Heavy Duty Truck Co., Ltd. and SAIC Group have started the demonstration operation of automatic driving heavy trucks in ports.

On November 18, the entrusted Ruian technology group and autox, a self driving enterprise, announced that they had reached a strategic cooperation. Both sides will fully integrate the advantages of resources, technology, service and platform, and strive to build an automatic driving industrial ecology with safety as the core, and realize the large-scale application of L4 automatic driving commercial trucks in 2021.

At present, the core value of the development of intelligent connected vehicles in China is to meet the continuous pursuit of safety, comfort and convenience of users, so that consumers can get rid of the dilemma of finding cars in shopping malls and enjoy the convenience of driving and stopping. In order to achieve this, technology, platform, supervision and other aspects need to be improved simultaneously.

Specifically, vehicle road coordination and single vehicle intelligence are two technical routes to achieve high automatic driving. After the networking of vehicles, the reliability and controllability of vehicles can be improved, and more driving support can be obtained through roadside equipment and cloud center. But this state of “Networking” will make vehicle and personal information more transparent. Next, the enterprise is expected to strengthen the construction of intelligent Internet platform and actively explore the integration of human and vehicle resource sharing system.

In the high level automatic driving system, laser radar has become an essential core sensor because of its excellent distance perception ability and strong adaptability to weak light environment. According to statistics, in the scene of commercial heavy truck driving, the continuous driving time of the whole vehicle on the highway exceeds 17 hours every day. Such high-intensity, round the clock work requirements for lidar are much higher than those for passenger car projects. In order to better meet the actual needs, the related enterprises need to speed up the development of radar core technology and further improve the product functions.

According to statistical data, from January to September this year, the sales volume of L2 class intelligent network connected passenger vehicles reached 1.96 million, accounting for 14.7% of the total sales of passenger cars. In addition, some enterprises have accelerated the research and development of L3 automatic driving vehicles, and carried out demonstration applications in automatic parking, automatic driving buses and unmanned intelligent heavy trucks.

The development of autopilot is not achieved overnight, but the actual landing is more emphasized. In the gradual development process of unmanned driving, the main engine manufacturers, new start-up companies, host manufacturers and all kinds of suppliers in the industrial chain need to work together to give full play to their respective advantages to build an industrial pattern. The four major elements of intelligent connected vehicle, namely algorithm, sensor, three electric system and high-precision map, are also expected to trigger a new round of investment boom.
