This year, Xiaomi launched a transparent OLED TV with a price of 50000 yuan, which earned a lot of gimmicks and high attention, and also brought transparent display into the public view. Compared with being a TV screen, the industry generally believes that the commercial scene which pursues beauty, sense of technology, sense of space and high budget is more suitable for transparent display.

Heated transparent display

In recent years, OLED has become a popular display technology in the global TV field. With the promotion and operation of many color TV brands, OLED has gradually established itself in the field of high-end TV.

According to omdia, a research organization, OLED products will occupy 31.5% of the global TV market with more than US $1500.

Industry experts believe that OLED’s net red attribute has its own traffic, and every move of OLED in the commercial field has also attracted much attention, especially the transparent OLED display with a strong sense of technology.

Global transparent OLED commercialization process accelerates

Earlier, when transparent OLED screens were applied to the windows of Beijing Metro Line 6 and Shenzhen Metro Line 10, they attracted the attention of industry, society and ordinary consumers. The screen can display real-time information, such as weather forecast and news, train operation and train location, etc., which can be called walking billboard. Xiaomi TV is also on the hot search list with the help of transparent OLED. After the launch of the 50000 yuan transparent TV, Xiaomi earned enough attention. However, how long OLED transparent display can stay on the home track is always a question mark.

Recently, lgdisplay signed an agreement with Panasonic to become its transparent OLED panel supplier. Subsequently, Panasonic released two transparent OLED displays, with retail stores, museums and commercial lounges as potential application scenarios. Since then, LG has announced that it will cooperate with Swedish manufacturers to develop an automatic sliding door with transparent OLED display. Some people in the industry pointed out that the commercial scene is the application field of transparent OLED at this stage. Lgdisplay has said that transparent OLED displays have broad application scenarios, such as shopping malls and office space.

Industry experts believe that the business scene emphasizes the sense of technology and space, and it is an area where transparent display can make a big show. Ma Beibei, doctor of integrated circuit Research Institute of saidI think tank, said in an interview with China electronic news that the display screen in commercial scenes has relatively simple contents and loose requirements for display performance.

Transparent display technology

Although transparent display attracts more attention because of OLED, OLED is not the only one that can realize transparent display, LCD, led, microled and so on can achieve a certain degree of transparent display. At present, LCD and led transparent display products have been widely used in the field of commercial display, and the degree of industrialization is much higher than that of OLED transparent display.

Liu Huilian, chief analyst of omdia, said in an interview with China electronic news that LCD adopts special liquid crystal materials and abandons CF and polarizer, which can also greatly improve light transmittance and achieve transparent display. At present, the technology is mostly used in commodity display cabinet screen, refrigerator screen, fish tank screen, unmanned vending machine screen, etc., and the price is high.

Led transparent screen is the most widely used transparent display product in the market. It has the characteristics of ultra wide viewing angle, ultra light and ultra-thin, high perspective (up to 80% ~ 95%) and low price. Led transparent display products can be divided into PCB hollow LED screen, LED ice screen, LED crystal film screen, etc., which have been widely used in window beautification, giant interior decoration and large screen display. Among them, LED crystal film screen is favored by the industry because of its flexibility and foldability.

It is reported that the crystal film screen adopts the naked crystal ball planting technology of LED lamp beads, the lamp board adopts transparent crystal film, the surface is etched with transparent network circuit, and the vacuum sealing process is adopted after the components are pasted on the surface, which can be bent and cut, and can be directly pasted on the glass curtain wall without damaging the original structure of the building. When not playing, the screen is invisible, and the indoor lighting is not affected.

So, which transparent display technology is the perfect partner for commercial display?

In Liu Huilian’s view, from the perspective of light transmittance, led direct light transparent screen has the highest light transmittance, followed by OLED products, with a light transmittance of about 40%. Because LCD is passive light-emitting, it needs backlight anyway, so the so-called transparency of LCD is not really transparent, but through technical means to increase the transmittance. From the perspective of cost, OLED has the highest cost, followed by LCD. But because the cost of LED direct light transparent screen is related to many factors, including point spacing, box, lamp bead, PCB board, power supply, etc., the cost of high ppiled products may exceed that of LCD or even OLED.

Technical difficulties to be solved

When it comes to why more and more transparent display products are used in commercial scenes, some experts believe that shopping malls, hotels and other places are more in pursuit of space and beauty, and transparent display products can undoubtedly meet the above needs at the same time.

Liu Huilian believes that the market’s pursuit of standardized and modular building material displays is getting higher and higher. In the future, commercial display products may become an indispensable part of building modules, just like glass. However, at this stage, there are still many difficulties for transparent display technology to be broken through, and the compatibility with commercial scenes needs to be further improved.

The balance between transparency and resolution is the biggest difficulty of transparent OLED panel. If the screen resolution is improved, the transmittance will be reduced.

Chen Hui, general manager of Ovir, pointed out in an interview with China Electronic News: “how to improve the resolution and transparency at the same time on the technical level is the key to the popularization of transparent OLED products to the public.”

Ma Beibei pointed out that as an active light-emitting technology, OLED does not need a backlight system and has a higher opening rate, which is suitable for making transparent screens with high transmittance. However, in the process of making the whole machine, it also needs the high cooperation of other systems and components.

Like OLED transparent display products, led transparent display also has technical problems.

Liu Huang, senior analyst of CCID Consulting, told China electronic news that due to the large LED beads in the commercial field, the resolution of LED transparent display products is low, which affects the image presentation effect. However, this kind of display screen is generally placed in shopping malls or places with large space, so the resolution requirement is not high. However, to meet the requirements of fine commercial display, led still has a long way to go. In Liu Huang’s view, from the perspective of technical principle, microled can also be made into transparent display products. If we achieve technological breakthrough in the future, the resolution and display effect of transparent display products can be further improved.
