According to the optoelectronic research office of trendforce, since Sony released large-scale spliced microled displays in 2017, Samsung, LG and other companies have followed up, driving the upsurge of microled in large-scale displays. It is estimated that from 2021 to 2022, self luminous microled TV is expected to come out.
However, at this stage, there are still many technical challenges and cost problems to be solved, so it can be expected that microled TV will be a luxury at the top of the pyramid in the early stage of commercial transformation.
Trendforce said that in the future, microled display technology is expected to enter the market with niche products such as small-size augmented reality, wearable display watches, high margin automotive displays, high-end TVs and large-scale commercial displays. In the future, microled display technology will have the opportunity to gradually penetrate into medium-sized tablets, laptops and desktop displays. Microled has the most explosive power in the large-scale display market, mainly due to the relatively low technical threshold. It is estimated that the chip output value of microled TV and large-scale display applications will reach US $2.3 billion in 2024.
It is pointed out that most of the micro led TVs and large-scale displays belong to the traditional LED display architecture at the present stage. With rgbled packaging and traditional passive (PM) driving mode, not only the cost is high, but also the reduction range of point spacing is limited. At present, they can only be applied in the field of commercial displays. In recent years, many panel factories and brand factories have developed more cost competitive active driver (AM) solutions, using TFT glass backplane process to achieve the purpose of addressing and controlling picture elements. The circuit design is relatively simple, and the wiring space used is also less, so as to meet the requirements of high-resolution specifications of microled TV.
At present, Samsung and LG, China Taiwan group and friends, and Chinese mainland Tianma and Huaxing optoelectronics have demonstrated AM driven related display applications. As for the LED light source, unlike the traditional LED display with rgbled package, Samsung chooses to cooperate with playnickel to realize full-color microled display with rgbled chip and mass transfer process; while Aida and Qun Chuang adopt the color conversion technology of blue LED chip and quantum dot or phosphor at the same time.
However, the cost of microled displays depends on the resolution and chip size. Due to higher resolution requirements in the future, the chip usage will increase significantly. Therefore, the amount of microled chips used in TV and display applications will be far more than other applications. For example, a 75 inch large display with 4K resolution requires at least 24 million rgbmicroled chips to be used as sub-pixel arrays. Therefore, the cost of processing and materials from microled chips to massive transfers will remain high.
Therefore, trendforce said that the technology and cost of microled TV and large-scale display will be the biggest challenge to enter the market in the short term. As the future TV will develop towards large size and high resolution, it will increase the difficulties of massive transfer, backplane, driver, chip, detection and maintenance technology in microled manufacturing process. After the technology is overcome, microled will become a new technology in the future Only with a rapid decline in instinct can we have a chance to enter the mainstream display field.
