The empirical design method uses the method of designing relay circuit diagram to design the ladder diagram of relatively simple switching value control system, that is, on the basis of some typical circuits, the ladder diagram is constantly modified and improved according to the specific requirements of the controlled object for the control system. Sometimes it is necessary to repeatedly debug and modify the trapezoid, add some contacts or intermediate programming elements, and finally get a satisfactory result.

This design method has no universal rules to follow, and is very tentative and arbitrary. The final result is not unique. The time and quality of design are closely related to the designer’s experience. It is generally used in the design of simpler ladder diagrams (such as manual programs). A large number of commonly used relay control circuits are given in some electrician manuals, These circuits can be referred to when designing ladder diagram with empirical method.
