Dongfeng’s self driving taxi fleet is officially put into operation in the commercial area of Wuhan Economic Development Zone.

There are more than 20 parking spots and more than 10 running lines in the area. Citizens can make an appointment online and experience the ride free of charge.

It is reported that the first batch of 42 self driving taxis are equipped with Beidou Positioning System, 5g communication technology and automatic sensing capability.

Under the requirements of current laws and regulations, every self driving taxi is equipped with a safety officer, which can ensure the safety of passengers in an emergency.

Dongfeng said that in the future, it will launch more than 200 self driving taxis in Wuhan Economic Development Zone, which will also become the largest self driving demonstration operation fleet and demonstration area with the largest number of vehicles and the richest scenes in China.

In October last year, Dongfeng announced the launch of the autonomous taxi pilot project, with an estimated total investment of 600 million yuan. In the next two years, it plans to expand the operation area of autonomous taxi from Wuhan Development Zone (Hannan District) to the core urban area of Wuhan city.

Also participating in this project are six domestic automatic driving companies, such as Yuanrong Qixing, Wenyuan Zhixing, autox, Yushi technology, Zhixing and Guoqi Zhilian. They jointly promote the implementation of this project with Dongfeng.

Dongfeng’s continuous exploration in automatic driving

Dongfeng’s Exploration on automatic driving started in 2013.

In 2013, Dongfeng developed a prototype of automatic driving based on Dongfeng Fengshen A60.

On September 5, 2016, Dongfeng company participated in the 2016 unmanned system challenge “crossing danger” held in Tahe, Heilongjiang Province, with a total distance of 15 km. Although equipped with Velodyne lidar, Dongfeng’s autopilot still failed to identify road leveling.

Dongfeng is well aware that compared with other companies, it has a relatively late layout in the field of automatic driving, so it has started the layout of multiple segments of automatic driving and increased the investment in automatic driving.

In 2018, Bian Ning, deputy director of the intelligent networking Department of Dongfeng Technology Center, said at the world intelligent networking automobile conference that based on the technical research of L3 level automatic driving, Dongfeng automobile has made layout in the aspects of minibus, robotaxi, networked passenger cars, unmanned mine cards, active driving military vehicles, etc.

After years of hard work, Dongfeng company’s investment has paid off.

In 2019, Dongfeng company acquired the first automatic driving vehicle license in Wuhan, and built the first LTE-V/5G vehicle networking demonstration area in Central China with China Mobile, HUAWEI and many other companies.

In 2020, Dongfeng company independently developed L3 class autopilot car Fengshen dazzle. It completed the first public high-speed measurement of the Han ten high-speed Wudang Mountains to Shiyan East Road, and has been equipped with mass production vehicle.

On commercial vehicles, the Dongfeng Sharing-VAN1.0Plus self driving vehicle, Dongfeng Sharing-VAN1.0Plus, was first developed by Dongfeng company in 2020, which is the first L4 5G automatic driving vehicle.

In addition, Dongfeng also launched its own brand “Landu”.

On December 18 last year, Landu, Dongfeng’s electric vehicle brand, officially released its first medium and large-scale intelligent electric SUV Landu free in Shenzhen. It is reported that the price of the car will not exceed 400000 yuan, and it is expected to be delivered to users in the third quarter of 2021.

Landu free provides four intelligent cockpit modes, including welcome mode, voyahment mode, voyahperformance high-energy mode, voyahatten mode and voyahcare mode. The vehicle can support the OTA upgrade of the whole vehicle, and is equipped with advanced intelligent driving assistance system as standard, which can realize 20 intelligent driving assistance functions.

Although Dongfeng entered the game a little later, from the current achievements, Dongfeng has caught up with many rivals.

All parties promote the commercialization of self driving taxis

Although Dongfeng’s self driving fleet has been successfully operated, there is still a lack of relevant laws and regulations to support its commercial operation. At present, the commercial operation of self driving taxi is in urgent need of relevant legal support.

In order to promote the commercial operation of self driving taxis, in January this year, Baidu, highway Science Research Institute of the Ministry of transport, Hunan Xiangjiang intelligent, Shanghai Songhong, Xintong Institute, Weima, Dongfeng, FAW and other institutions jointly drafted and released the technical requirements group standard for self driving taxis. This standard for self driving taxis is expected to be upgraded to the industry standard, Even national standards.

The standard consists of two parts, namely “self driving taxi Part 1: technical requirements for vehicle operation” and “self driving taxi Part 2: Test methods and requirements for self driving function”.

“Self driving taxi Part 1: technical requirements for vehicle operation” includes the basic requirements, functions, operation equipment, information and communication safety and reliability of self driving taxi.

Specifically, it includes air quality, safety configuration, reliability, environmental adaptability, functional requirements, operation equipment requirements, information and communication requirements, etc.

In terms of human-computer interaction, passengers are required to make an appointment and receive orders through the application program, and they need to identify and verify their identity after boarding. In addition, the automatic taxi needs to turn on recording and monitoring in the whole process of receiving orders, and give corresponding prompts to passengers.

In the car, passengers can know the journey start, vehicle path planning, vehicle location, real-time speed, surrounding traffic participants, traffic signs, etc. in addition, those with v2x function should also display the interaction of side intelligent devices. At the same time, passengers can also have audio-visual entertainment in the self driving taxi and control the temperature in the car.

In terms of safety, the self driving taxi should also have the functions of passenger “one key call” request for remote assistance, seat belt monitoring and so on.

“Autonomous taxi Part 2: automatic driving function test methods and requirements” stipulates that the vehicle needs to pass the test of different road conditions such as pit road, washboard road, pebble road and expressway with a total of 30000 km, and ensure normal driving.

In the case of full passengers, the automatic taxi can successfully complete the steering, braking, shifting, acceleration and other operations, and can also meet the test requirements under normal weather conditions in rainy days and low visibility conditions.

At the same time, when there is no safety officer, there are provisions for emergencies, including “ghost probe”.

If this standard passes smoothly and becomes the industry standard of self driving taxi, or even the national standard, then the industry of self driving taxi will develop in an all-round way and the process of self driving in China will be greatly accelerated.

The successful operation of Wuhan automatic driving fleet promoted by Dongfeng Motor shows that the pace of automatic driving in China has been accelerated to a certain extent. In the future, if the national level introduces the standard of self driving taxi and allows the full commercial operation of self driving taxi under the national law, China’s self driving process will also be in the forefront of the world.
