As a key component of the national digital strategy, smart city has also become a “test ground” for new technologies such as 5g, artificial intelligence, Internet of things, big data and cloud computing.

Facing the new development trend, IDC recently released the report IDC futurescape: global smart city 2020 forecast – China enlightenment. Provide reference for the participants in the five-year planning and management of the city.

Specifically, the 2020 global smart city forecast released by IDC includes scale difficulty, public security policy, data privacy, shared economic impact, 5g scenario, Internet of vehicles and other contents. According to IDC’s prediction, by 2022, 30% of smart city digital twin platforms will be used to deal with the complexity brought by massive assets, products and their relationships. For many ordinary people, digital twin is a new word. So, what is digital twin? What is the significance of digital twin platform for smart city construction?

Digital twin integrates the simulation process of multi-disciplinary, multi physical quantity, multi-scale and multi probability, and makes full use of the data such as physical model, sensor update and operation history to complete the mapping in the virtual space, so as to reflect the whole life cycle process of the corresponding physical equipment. Early digital twins were used for the health maintenance and guarantee of aerospace vehicles, and then gradually expanded to medical treatment, industry, smart city and other fields.

In terms of urban governance and control, digital twin technology has several significant advantages: first, it provides a panoramic perspective, urban multi-dimensional observation and full-scale data analysis, deduces and predicts the urban development trend in advance, drives decision-making with data, verifies decision-making with simulation, and promotes scientific decision-making; Second, improve fine management, multi angle monitoring and detection, and multi-dimensional perception of land, sea and air, so that urban governance can be more comprehensive; The third is to provide collaborative means. By using digital twin technology and related platforms, urban governance means are upgrading to ubiquitous perception digitization. Taking the three capabilities of connection, perception and computing as the main line, we will promote the intelligent upgrading of infrastructure and further enrich urban governance means.

For example, Hangzhou has applied digital twin technology to urban management, with intelligent machines taking over 1300 intersection signals and traffic videos of 4500 roads. Combining 5g MR with digital twin technology to establish a virtual manufacturing environment, which can digitally represent the core stages of intelligent manufacturing such as operation teaching, equipment spot inspection, CPS data / structure visualization, operation status alarm and fault diagnosis and analysis, which can improve resource utilization and reduce cost.

Of course, digital twin technology is still in its infancy. It is far from being widely used in medical, urban, industrial equipment and other fields. It also needs to break through multiple problems such as concept, specification, technology and supporting facilities. The solution of these problems still needs some time, and requires the joint cooperation of scientific research institutions, government departments and other parties.
