Cypress Semiconductor Corporation today announced that its EZ-PD™ CCG1 and EZ-PD CCG2 USB Power Delivery (PD) controllers have passed USB-IF certification testing for USB Type-C™ DRP (Dual Role Port), DFP (downstream port) and UFP (upstream port) applications. At a recent USB-IF compatibility training seminar in Portland, Oregon, USA, these Cypress controllers received the following Product Test IDs: 1096037, 1096039, 1096040, 1096042, 1096044, and 1096047. EZ-PD controllers are suitable for a variety of products, such as USB Type-C notebooks, power adapters, monitors, docking stations, cables and cable adapters (dongles). Cypress's EZ-PD CCG1 and second-generation EZ-PD CCG2 controllers have previously passed USB Power Delivery (PD) electronic identification certification, with product test IDs 1095054 and 1095059, respectively. Electronic identification chips are used in USB powered cables, including USB Type-C, to report the characteristics supported by the cable, such as current-carrying capacity, supported protocols, and vendor identity. The USB Type-C standard is rapidly gaining support from top PC manufacturers, with small, easy-to-use connectors and cables capable of transferring data across multiple protocols and capable of delivering up to 100 watts of power. The plug height of the Type-C standard connector is only 2.4mm, which is significantly smaller than the existing 4.5mm USB Type-A standard connector. In addition to carrying standard USB signals, DisplayPort and Mobile High-Resolution Link (MHL) signals can also be carried over the same connector in an alternative mode to USB Type-C.

The EZ-PD CCG2 is packaged in a 3.3 mm2 Wafer Level Chip Scale Package (WLCSP), 14-pin DFN or 24-pin QFN.
