Cypress Semiconductor Corporation today announced that its EZ-PD™ CCG1 and EZ-PD CCG2 USB Power Delivery (PD) controllers have passed USB-IF certification testing for USB Type-C™ DRP (Dual Role Port), DFP (downstream port) and UFP (upstream port) applications. At a recent USB-IF compatibility training seminar in Portland, Oregon, USA, these Cypress controllers received the following Product Test IDs: 1096037, 1096039, 1096040, 1096042, 1096044, and 1096047. EZ-PD controllers are suitable for a variety of products, such as USB Type-C notebooks, power adapters, monitors, docking stations, cables and cable adapters (dongles). Cypress has demonstrated its EZ-PD controller and EZ-USB® SuperSpeed USB product line at Intel Developer Conference, August 18-20, 2015, in Booth 910.

Cypress's EZ-PD CCG1 and second-generation EZ-PD CCG2 controllers have previously passed USB Power Delivery (PD) electronic identification certification, with product test IDs 1095054 and 1095059, respectively. Electronic identification chips are used in USB powered cables, including USB Type-C, to report the characteristics supported by the cable, such as current-carrying capacity, supported protocols, and vendor identity. The USB Type-C standard is rapidly gaining support from top PC manufacturers, with small, easy-to-use connectors and cables capable of transferring data across multiple protocols and capable of delivering up to 100 watts of power. The plug height of the Type-C standard connector is only 2.4mm, which is significantly smaller than the existing 4.5mm USB Type-A standard connector. In addition to carrying standard USB signals, DisplayPort and Mobile High-Resolution Link (MHL) signals can also be carried over the same connector in an alternative mode to USB Type-C.

"The combination of USB 3.1 Gen 2, USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery will enable new performance, connectivity and charging usage models for many computing and mobile applications," said Jeff Ravencraft, president and COO of USB-IF. High performance, high power and high convenience with only one cable. USB-IF certification fundamentally ensures that a product meets the highest standards in the industry and is interoperable with other products with the same certification logo. Such as USB-IF certified products like Cypress's flexible EZ-PD CCG1 and CCG2 controllers bring USB power delivery and a seamless user experience to emerging USB Type-C products."

"Our programmable EZ-PD USB Type-C solutions give customers unparalleled design flexibility to meet a variety of application needs," said Ajay Srikrishna, vice president of the USB product line at Cypress. USB-IF certified. Cypress is committed to expanding our USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery solutions, enabling next-generation slim designs and ensuring a smooth transition to USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery.”

The EZ-PD CCG1 USB Type-C port controller is based on Cypress's PSoC® 4 programmable system-on-chip architecture. The flexibility of this architecture allows Cypress to rapidly integrate the transceivers required for Type-C communications, quickly leading products to market within a few weeks, and capturing the commanding heights of the Type-C port controller market. The controller has good design flexibility and can be used in USB Type-C applications such as cables, power adapters, notebooks, transceivers and displays. You can watch a video of CCG1 products delivering DisplayPort signals over USBType-C at www.cypress.com/ccg1video.

The programmable EZ-PD CCG2 controller is optimized for 2.4mm thick USB Type-C cable connectors and supports all USB Type-C downstream ports (DFP), upstream ports (UFP) or dual-role ports ( DRP) application. The EZ-PD CCG2 is packaged in a 3.3 mm2 Wafer Level Chip Scale Package (WLCSP), 14-pin DFN or 24-pin QFN. The EZ-PD CCG2 is the first programmable solution that fully integrates the USB Type-C transceiver, system-level ESD protection and termination resistors required for all USB Type-C applications.
