Cypress Semiconductor, the USB market leader, has released samples of the industry's first integrated programmable USB Type-C port controller. The CCG1 Type-C port controller is based on Cypress's PSoC® 4 programmable system-on-chip architecture. This architecture enables Cypress to rapidly integrate the transceivers required for Type-C communications, quickly leading products to market within a few weeks, and grabbing a beachhead in the Type-C port controller market. In 2015, the size of this market is expected to be $65 million, and it will reach $350 million in 2019, with a compound annual growth rate of 40%. The CCG1 USB Type-C controller integrates voltage monitoring and current monitoring circuits, which are critical for power adapters. The controller also offers design flexibility and can be upgraded during development, on the production line, or in the field. In order to adapt to future changes in the USB-IF standard, this function is particularly important, and only a simple firmware modification can meet the compatibility requirements.

Availability

The CYPD11XX CCG1 Type-C port controller family is sampling now and will be in volume production in March. The CCG1 is available in 40-pin QFN packages for notebook computers, 16-pin SOIC and 28-pin SSOP packages for power adapters, and 35-ball WLCSP packages for cable and mobile applications.
