Cypress Semiconductor, the USB market leader, has released samples of the industry's first integrated programmable USB Type-C port controller. The USB Type-C standard is rapidly gaining support from top PC manufacturers, with small, easy-to-use connectors and cables capable of transferring data across multiple protocols and capable of delivering up to 100 watts of power—versus the previous standard of 7.5 watts Significant improvement compared to. These manufacturers are eagerly awaiting the introduction of this controller solution to bring a revolutionary new generation of cables, power adapters, notebooks and monitors to market.

The CCG1 Type-C port controller is based on Cypress's PSoC® 4 programmable system-on-chip architecture. This architecture enables Cypress to rapidly integrate the transceivers required for Type-C communications, quickly leading products to market within a few weeks, and grabbing a beachhead in the Type-C port controller market. In 2015, the size of this market is expected to be $65 million, and it will reach $350 million in 2019, with a compound annual growth rate of 40%. The CCG1 USB Type-C controller integrates voltage monitoring and current monitoring circuits, which are critical for power adapters. The controller also offers design flexibility and can be upgraded during development, on the production line, or in the field. In order to adapt to future changes in the USB-IF standard, this function is particularly important, and only a simple firmware modification can meet the compatibility requirements.

The plug height of the Type-C standard connector is only 2.4mm, which is significantly smaller than the existing 4.5mm USB Type-A standard connector. And it also allows USB signals to be carried over the same connector, as well as PCIe or DisplayPort signals. Badri Kothandaraman, executive vice president of Cypress's Data Communications Group, said: "The unmatched flexibility of our PSoC architecture allowed us to rapidly develop our CCG1 controller to meet market demand for an integrated solution. CCG1 will be available later this year. The next generation of PCs and notebooks that will be on the horizon for a while now offers a single connector and cable solution. It expands our USB product line and continues Cypress's 20-year role as an innovator in the USB business."

John Hyde, author of the book "USB Design Cases," said: "The USB 3.0 advocacy group released both the Type-C and Power Delivery 2.0 standards last August, which took the industry by surprise because it was a completely new way of doing things. Cypress had a working prototype at its first USB 3.1 developer day in September."

Cypress's PSoC 4 architecture integrates the low-power ARM® Cortex™-M0 core with PSoC's unique programmable analog and digital peripherals to form the industry's most flexible and scalable low-power mixed-signal architecture. The forward-looking design of PSoC enables it to adapt to last-minute specification changes. It enables firmware-based modifications at any point in the design cycle, even in the field. All PSoC devices can be dynamically reconfigured, allowing designers to convert internal resources online to perform the same tasks with fewer ICs.

The CYPD11XX CCG1 Type-C port controller family is sampling now and will be in volume production in March. The CCG1 is available in 40-pin QFN packages for notebook computers, 16-pin SOIC and 28-pin SSOP packages for power adapters, and 35-ball WLCSP packages for cable and mobile applications.
