Panel manufacturers such as Samsung display, LG display, AUO and Innolux have also significantly increased their investment.
Against the background of this trend, yole D é veloppement (yole) put forward a new report entitled “microled industry”. “There is no doubt that microled has made progress in all aspects.” Dr. Eric virey, chief analyst of yole display market and technology, announced that in his new report, he revealed the current situation and adoption of the technology.
The report shows that the patent application of microled is increasing exponentially and the technology is also improving. In the past 24 months, the external quantum efficiency of blue-green microled chips has more than doubled. The performance of some transfer and assembly processes is close to that required to achieve some microled consumer applications. The expansion of prototypes demonstrated by nearly 20 companies in the past 18 months has also made significant progress.

However, there are still important obstacles for critical applications. For many of them, economics pushed the die size requirement to 10 μ M below, which combines the challenges of efficiency, transfer and manufacturability. Despite great improvements, the efficiency of small molds is still very low. In most cases, the display efficiency based on this technology is still not compared with OLED. Therefore, we need to make great efforts to further improve the internal quantum efficiency, light extraction and beam shaping of green and red microled chips.
For microled, the first few prototypes provide a strong return on experience, but mature consumer displays may need more products. Startups are entering the valley of death: many companies may not be able to raise enough capital to successfully survive this capital and resource intensive stage. As a strategic investor or development partner, support and partnership with large display manufacturers or OEMs are very important.
