The novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic in the world has been gradually controlled in China. With the reduction of risk levels in various regions, the resumption of work and recovery has been accelerated. 5g, which has played an important role in epidemic prevention and resistance, has been unanimously recognized by the whole society. Since April, the domestic 5g construction has been fully started. First, the large bidding order of phase II 5gsa of the three operators was launched, followed by the construction of other 5g projects, such as the 5g news jointly launched by the three operators and the first MEC commercial scale network launched by China Unicom. In addition, local governments have actively issued relevant 5g development promotion policies, requiring operators to achieve 5g coverage at the county level by the end of this year. All these news make people feel that China’s 5g development will reach a climax.
This year will be the key time node for China’s large-scale construction of 5g. Data show that as of February this year, the number of 5g base stations in China has reached 160000, and the scale of 5g users has exceeded 13 million. By the end of this year, the three major operators will build more than 550000 5g base stations. From the perspective of the scale of 5g network and the depth and breadth of application, the 5g development process in China is very fast. Indeed, compared with other parts of the world, China’s 5g development has a good momentum. From the perspective of network technology, we are gradually starting to deploy large-scale SA networks nationwide, while Japan and South Korea are still staying in NSA; In terms of business applications, China is at the forefront of the world. 5g + industrial Internet, 5g + VR and 5g + smart medicine are actively embracing 5g in almost all walks of life. Previously, the three operators opened 5g + 4K live cloud video service on Mount Everest, which is a good evidence.
However, while applauding the development speed of China’s 5g construction, we should calmly realize that at present, 5g development still faces many difficulties and challenges. It can even be said that the challenge of 5g has just begun.
Wu Hequan, academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering, said when talking about the 5g development of “new infrastructure” recently that 5g is regarded as the first choice of “new infrastructure” and is given the important task of coping with the economic downward pressure brought by the epidemic and providing a new engine for high-quality and sustainable economic development. “For China’s 5g, the ‘new infrastructure’ is not only a construction project, but also the continuation of technological innovation. It is a real test of whether China’s 5g can lead.” Wu Hequan clearly pointed out that the 5g “new infrastructure” will bring five challenges of technology, operation and maintenance, products, market and security maturity.
Wang Zhiqin, vice president of China information and Communication Research Institute, leader of imt-2020 (5g) promotion group and Secretary General of 5g application industry array, believes that 5g faces challenges in three aspects: network slicing, industry virtual private network and network security. For example, on the standard of end-to-end network slicing, there is an urgent need to get through the end-to-end work of network slicing in terms of functional architecture and management architecture, both internationally and domestically. At the same time, in the process of cross domain, not only the end-to-end slicing capability standard has not been opened, but also the lack of automatic deployment capability of network slicing.
This is the view of authoritative experts in 5g field in China. So what are the specific views of 5g operators? Recently, I have communicated with relevant people of the three major operators, and everyone’s views tend to be consistent. For example, relevant people of China Telecom said that 5gsa standard is still changing dynamically. The “three high” problems in 5g construction, as well as terminal, market and other problems, are all challenges faced in 5g development. China Telecom also actively solves these problems through co construction and sharing, ecological construction and other measures to promote 5g development. China Unicom has just announced the launch of the first MEC scale commercial network in the world to promote the development of 5g edge applications, but there are still many problems to be solved in the commercial application of MEC.
Of course, the development of any new thing will face great challenges. We need to solve problems in development and seek development in problems. We are actively responding to the challenges that 5g development is facing. In response to the challenges of these problems, the Ministry of industry and information technology has issued or will issue many policies. Recently, the Ministry of industry and information technology issued the notice on promoting the accelerated development of 5g, proposing to organize the research and pilot of 5g industry virtual private network, and open up key links such as standards, technology, application and deployment. At the same time, the industry is also taking positive action to carry out practical pilot projects from multiple dimensions such as technology, product scheme and application. At present, all walks of life in China have taken action to actively embrace 5g.
Of course, finally, I would like to suggest that in the process of promoting 5g construction, in addition to issuing relevant policies and agreeing goals for operators, local governments also need to come up with real gold and silver to help operators accelerate the pace of 5g network construction.
