According to the official websites of China Telecom and China Unicom, the two companies started the single source procurement of wireless network main equipment of 5gsa supplement project at the same time. Huawei Technology Co., Ltd., ZTE Co., Ltd., Ericsson (China) Communication Co., Ltd. and Datang Mobile Communication Equipment Co., Ltd. are the proposed single source procurement suppliers.

2020 is the first year of 5g large-scale construction in China and the first year of 5g commercial scale. China Telecom and China Unicom build 5g network in the way of co construction and sharing, which is not only the difficulty but also the highlight of network construction this year.

China Telecom and China Unicom jointly build 5g network

By the end of October, China Unicom and China Telecom had made remarkable achievements since the implementation of joint construction and sharing. The scale of 5g base stations had reached 380000, saving 40% in CAPEX and 35% in OPEX; The sharing rate has reached more than 95%, and the coverage of all prefecture level cities in China has been realized.

At the same time, co construction and sharing also brings technical advantages. For example, it achieves a peak downlink rate of 3.2gbps with 200MHz bandwidth outdoors. In addition, co construction and sharing has also saved a lot of investment. According to preliminary statistics, more than 60 billion yuan of construction investment can be saved for the two countries, so as to quickly form 5g network coverage capacity with the least investment and in the shortest time.

Taking China Telecom as an example, it announced the global commercial launch of Shenzhen SA network in October 2019, took the lead in issuing the 5gsa Deployment Guide in June 2020, and announced the establishment of the world’s largest 5gsa co construction and sharing network in November this year. So far, China Telecom 5g base stations have covered more than 300 cities in China, with more than 70 million 5g users. China Unicom has not released 5g user data.

Last September, China Telecom Co., Ltd. and China United Network Communication Co., Ltd. signed the 5g Network Co Construction and sharing framework cooperation agreement. According to the cooperation agreement, China Telecom will cooperate with China Unicom to build a 5g access network nationwide, share 5g frequency resources, and build 5g core networks respectively.

Both parties shall delimit areas and construct in different areas, and who shall build, invest, maintain and bear the network operation cost. The two sides will undertake construction in 15 urban districts. Taking the total scale of 4G base stations (including rooms) of both sides as the main reference, the construction area ratio of China Telecom and China Unicom is 4:6 in five cities: Beijing, Tianjin, Zhengzhou, Qingdao and Shijiazhuang; In Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Suzhou, Changsha, Wuhan and Chengdu, the construction area ratio of China Telecom to China Unicom is 6:4; In addition to the above regions, China Telecom has independently undertaken the construction of 10 prefectures and cities in Guangdong Province, 5 prefectures and cities in Zhejiang Province and 17 provinces (Anhui, Fujian, Gansu, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Ningxia, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Tibet, Xinjiang and Yunnan), and China Unicom has independently undertaken the construction of 9 prefectures and cities in Guangdong Province, 5 prefectures and cities in Zhejiang Province and 8 provinces.
