Chen Qingtai, chairman of the 100 people’s Association of electric vehicles of China, has the following main points:

2. The development of intelligent vehicles needs to strengthen the innovation and research and development of core technologies and key components. Relevant industries and enterprises should seize this opportunity to lay a solid foundation for new components in China, and support the development of intelligent automobile industry with high-quality intelligent parts and software;

3. Cross border integration and collaborative innovation are the key to the success or failure of intelligent vehicles. Automobile enterprises should extend their cooperation and Internet, it and AI enterprises should put their hands in. Both sides will work together to reconstruct the automobile industry chain and jointly build the industrial ecology of intelligent vehicles.

In 2010, China took the lead in the industrialization of pure electric vehicles with energy storage batteries in the world. At that time, major countries and enterprises were still skeptical. But after several years of practice and development, it has been proved that the energy storage battery electric vehicle technology route is feasible, and has been recognized by the governments and enterprises of major countries.

2016 is a landmark year. In this year, major national and international iconic automobile companies have transformed from wait-and-see to electric vehicles, and even some countries have announced the timetable for banning the sale of traditional fuel vehicles. The determination and strength exceeded many people’s expectations, which led to the most profound reform of the automobile industry in more than 100 years.

Next, I’d like to talk about three ideas on the topic of intelligent connected vehicles and discuss them with you.

First, the next step in the automotive revolution is intelligence and networking.

The car revolution is not going on in isolation. In parallel with it are the energy revolution, the information revolution, the transportation revolution and the smart city. Electric vehicles, which have subverted fuel vehicles, will be connected with green, Internet connected, intelligent and shared, so as to benefit the society and change the world again. Today, the battery, mileage and charging pile that the government and enterprises are concerned about are only the prelude to the whole process. The technological progress of electric vehicles must be fought in two lines: one front is the infrastructure of batteries, motors, electronic control and charging, which must be laid to ensure the good driving function of electric vehicles; the other front is also the focus of future competition, that is, networking and intellectualization, and finally realize unmanned driving. This is necessary to give full play to the automobile revolution and benefit the society. Only when two fronts advance together can we gain a firm foothold.

Chen Qingtai: the development of intelligent vehicles needs to strengthen the innovation and research and development of core technologies and key components

From the stage of development, electrification has made some progress. Next, we should put the networking and intelligence into a more important position. In September 2019, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council jointly issued the outline of building a transportation power, proposing to “strengthen the research and development of intelligent networked vehicles (intelligent vehicles, automatic driving, vehicle road coordination) and construct a complete industrial chain”. In February this year, eleven ministries and commissions of the State Council jointly issued the “innovation and development strategy of intelligent vehicles”, which proposed that “we should comply with the trend of a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial revolution, seize the opportunity of the development strategy of intelligent industry, and accelerate the innovation and development of intelligent vehicles”.

In the future, the electric vehicle of intelligent network connection is a leading core product of energy revolution, information revolution, transportation revolution and smart city construction. It has a strong ability to widely absorb new energy information, networking, intelligence, big data, as well as new technologies, new materials, electronic power, advanced manufacturing and other new development and potential energy, and has become a large platform for the integration and innovation of many industries.

Second, the development of intelligent vehicles needs to strengthen the innovation and research and development of core technologies and key components.

From the history of the development of automobile industry, every progress of automobile technology and important breakthrough of products are the result of close cooperation between vehicle and parts enterprises. Generally speaking, vehicle enterprises play an important role in technology integration, but most of the core technologies and key components come from parts companies, such as gasoline injection, supercharger, anti lock brake, airbag, radial tire, etc.

Before that, China’s automobile industry had not paid enough attention to and invested in parts and components, which made China’s automobile industry suffer from the hollow core parts. This phenomenon is more obvious in the outbreak of the new epidemic and the changes in the international situation this year. The production and sales volume of China’s automobile has ranked first in the world, but there are still many weaknesses and pain points in the core technology and key parts.

Today, from the electrification, networking, intelligent to the final driverless of the car, to a great extent, it has changed and expanded the chain of parts, and changed the concept and scope of auto parts. From the battery, motor, electronic control to the chips, sensors, controllers and actuators involved in the automatic driving of new energy vehicles, to the software such as high-precision map, network communication, cloud control platform, AI algorithm and other software, have become an important part of the industry chain.

At present, the technical barrier of intelligent parts has not yet formed, and there are many choices of technical routes. There is a huge space for innovation, which provides many opportunities for new entrants, and also brings historical opportunities for the development of China’s spare parts enterprises, especially the small and medium-sized technology-based enterprises. The bottom of the power of intelligent automobile is the power of intelligent parts. It is gratifying that the new industrial chain involves information technology, networking, artificial intelligence and other fields, which have been developing well in China in recent years. Relevant industries and enterprises should seize this opportunity, lay a solid foundation for China’s new components, and support the development of intelligent automobile industry with high-quality intelligent parts and software.

Third, cross border integration and collaborative innovation are the key to success.

The “attributes” and “definition” of automobiles have been changed, and the industrial chain of intelligent vehicles has been far beyond the scope covered by the traditional industrial chain of fuel vehicles. The automobile has been expanded from a typical mechanical product to an electrical and electronic product; from a mobile machine, it has been expanded to “super mobile intelligent terminal”, Internet products defined by software and electronic information high-tech products. Information technology, networking, intelligence, big data, system software and other high-tech has become the focus of competition. Facing such a large span of high-tech group, it is very difficult for automobile enterprises to take it exclusively. Cross border integration and collaborative innovation are the key to success.

As for the whole country, China has technical advantages and industrial foundation in the fields of communication technology, 5g, Internet, Beidou satellite positioning, network scale, big data and other fields. We also have powerful power grid companies, electronic information companies, Internet companies, communication operation companies and so on. It is particularly important that there are a large number of high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises in the field of digitalization, informatization and intelligence, and they all have strong strength in the field of intelligent network connection. But the automobile industry and enterprises are relatively unfamiliar with this. The potential of cross-border collaborative innovation is huge. The most important thing for automobile enterprises is the whole technology integration. Many technical elements can be obtained through various forms of joint innovation.

Automobile enterprises should extend their cooperation hand, and Internet, it and AI enterprises should put their hands in. Both sides will work together to reconstruct the automobile industry chain and jointly build the industrial ecology of intelligent vehicles.
