Over the past 30 years, thanks to the successful model of basic sharing, thousands of partners have formed a strong arm ecosystem and cooperated to produce more than 150 billion chips based on ARM architecture. This ecosystem is described as the oxygen to promote the ecological participation, and it also makes the development work as easy as breathing.
In terms of solving the challenges of Internet of things (IOT) development and deployment, the arm ecosystem model has always been highly applicable. In particular, if IOT is to succeed, it requires concerted efforts, which can not be done by one company alone. So far, the ecosystem model of arm has produced billions of IOT devices shipped by partners and driven by chips based on ARM architecture.
In order to simplify IOT for developers, in the past decade, arm has developed a powerful ecosystem centered on the free and open source IOT operating system (mbedos), including more than 425000 third-party software developers and more than 150 mbed enabled boards and modules.

Jointly shape the future of mbedos

The IOT market is gradually expanding, with hundreds of billions and eventually becoming one trillion networked devices. If arm’s ecosystem model wants to succeed, it needs to rely on partners’ continuous cooperation and pursuit of differentiation. And because of that,Based on the direct feedback from semiconductor supply partners, arm announced the launch of a new mbedos partner governance model。 This is a very important step for arm to promote sustainable innovation and differentiation in the IOT ecosystem. Through this model, arm authorizes semiconductor partners to help shape and determine the future direction of mbedos, while still maintaining the strong business leadership and support provided by arm for many years.
Mbedos has always been an open source IOT operating system, and arm is transferring its management rights, let the semiconductor partners have greater autonomy, which can directly affect the future development of this system and strengthen its ability to create new capabilities, new features and new functions, which is very key to the IOT development of trillions of networked devices in the future. In order to achieve this goal, arm launched a new mechanism, including holding a product working group meeting once a month. At the meeting, arm and semiconductor partners will vote to decide which new capabilities will be preferentially added to mbedos. All mbedsilicon partner program members are also welcome to join free of charge. A number of semiconductor partners, including adeno semiconductor, Cypress Semiconductor, maximintegrated, Xintang technology, NXP semiconductor, Renesas electronics, Ruiyu semiconductor, Samsung, core technology and u-blox, have actively participated in this work group.

Unique partner management model

The unique feature of arm’s new management model is that in terms of implementing new product capabilities, arm provides partners with a way of cooperation and joint construction; In contrast, most commercial IOT operating systems are often developed by a single manufacturer, the management mode is lack of hardware partners, and they do not know how to contribute to the operating system. The results of the discussion of the arm product working group will eventually benefit the more extensive armiot ecosystem. For example, according to the initial contributions of partners, arm is developing new low-power battery optimization, which is expected to prolong the battery life of devices deployed in various fields in the future.
