In order to solve some of the most urgent challenges faced by the global human society today, from urbanization, aging population, increasingly serious pollution to traffic congestion, mobility will play a key role. Technology continues to evolve to help people overcome these challenges; Stimulated by the endless innovations in self driving vehicles, electrification, intelligent infrastructure, shared services and connectivity, new transportation methods are emerging. The Advanced Driver Assistance Systems has been saving the lives of drivers, passengers and pedestrians around the world, and the dream of self driving cars seems to be within the limits of our ability. It may be accompanied by safer roads, convenient travel for all, and a more sustainable city.
But the real realization of self driving car is not something that only one company can do – it needs the cooperation of industry level. At the arm Techcon conference in San Jose, USA today,Arm announced that it is a founding member of the self driving car computing Association (avcc), a group of industry leaders focused on accelerating large-scale delivery of safer and more affordable self driving cars.Avcc members include general motors, Toyota, Denso, Continental, Bosch, NXP semiconductors and NVIDIA.

Avcc: accelerating large scale delivery of safer and more affordable self driving vehicles

How can deployable self driving vehicles become a reality? It requires listening, learning and acting. There are many major challenges in deploying self driving vehicles, including the realization of ultra-high performance computing under the constraints of vehicle energy consumption, heat energy and size, so as to operate large and complex self driving software stack.
Avcc understands the technical complexities and obstacles that must be overcome in deploying self driving vehicles. The future goal is to work together to launch a conceptual computing platform to meet these challenges. This organization has gathered unique professional expertise and common goals, and its first goal is to define a reference architecture and platform, so as to achieve the performance goal of self driving vehicles under the constraints of practicality and economy of vehicle deployment. The design of this computing platform is intended to enable the current prototype system to deploy on a large scale and to develop corresponding software API requirements for each component in the automatic driving system.

Enabling innovation

In the current road conditions, commuting is probably the most worrying thing every day, because you have to face all kinds of distracted drivers on the congested road. But imagine that the vehicle can perceive the dynamic environment, and the vehicle can seamlessly communicate with other vehicles, roadside infrastructure and digital service network, and deliver passengers or goods to the destination safely and automatically. Drivers will become passengers, so they can use the extra time to rest or work; Vehicles will become mobile content consumption platform, and mobile will become safer and more sustainable.
Arm is pleased to join hands with other leading companies in the automotive industry to take the automotive industry further into the future: a self driving car can not only remove many of the pressures brought about by today’s travel and commuting, but also play a more important role in coping with broader social challenges in this future. As this exciting proposal grows, more new developments are worth watching!
