Development status of safety technology for lithium ion battery

According to the current situation of lithium-ion battery technology development, lithium-ion battery is conducive to the development of innovative technology. They are light weight, durable, and have immeasurable value in the development of UAV consumer technology. However, they are also known for volatility, and before the CTIA certification program was launched, bad news meant that consumers and consumer electronics manufacturers increasingly questioned their long-term viability.

Consumer electronic devices are becoming smaller and smaller, with many power consumption functions, resulting in smaller batteries, but at the same time larger capacity. This device is usually placed in the pocket of people, adding potential safety hazards and the risk of personal injury. Consumer awareness plays an important role in promoting the safe use of batteries and preventing the purchase of non genuine or counterfeit batteries and chargers, because they are tempted by lower prices and are not aware of potential safety hazards.

This is particularly important for so-called smart batteries, which use the SMBus protocol to communicate between battery packs, chargers and end use products. There may be a situation that the brand charger supplied with the phone meets the level 2 of SMBus protocol, so it depends on the brand battery pack to guide the charging algorithm requirements. If a non-standard battery is installed, there may not be such protection measures that may lead to overcharge. The same applies to non genuine chargers.

Analysis on the development trend of safety technology of lithium ion battery

It’s true that today’s increase in battery capacity and end-user abuse is part of the reason for the bad publicity of lithium-ion batteries, but the manufacturing process has also been questioned. Many of the battery safety incidents involved are related to inadequate procedures to prevent contaminants in production. In this case, it is possible that the metal particles penetrate through the battery separator and lead to a short circuit between the cathode and anode, leading to thermal runaway.

Lithium ion battery

Due to the increasing number of accidents involving lithium-ion batteries, international measures have been taken to improve the testing and quality control of batteries and battery packs. At present, standards are applied to solve this problem, including ul1642 “lithium ion battery”, ieee1725 “IEEE standard for rechargeable batteries for cellular phones” and “recommendations of the United Nations manual on transport tests and standards for dangerous goods”.

Another key catalyst for improving the safety of lithium-ion batteries, for example, is the introduction of the CTIA certification program. This is an industry-leading program for mobile handheld devices in the United States, based on ieee1725 standard.

The CTIA battery certification program has had a positive impact on a global scale, because it is impossible for manufacturers to exclude themselves from the great potential of the U.S. market by not developing products that meet this standard.

CTIA is designed in collaboration with leading cellular network operators such as at & T and Verizon, as well as experts in the battery industry. It requires all products to undergo mandatory third-party testing and auditing, certification categories include batteries, battery packs and power adapters, as well as complete cellular product systems. CTIA requirements now include another standard, ieee1625, for laptops with GSM capabilities using lithium-ion batteries.

The future of safety technology development of lithium ion battery

Lithium ion battery pack

The development of lithium-ion battery technology plays an important role in the development of battery technology, especially in the field of consumer electronics. Today’s consumers demand enhanced functionality and portability from mobile devices and other technologies. Lithium ion batteries help manufacturers achieve this goal.

Although lithium-ion batteries still have some disadvantages, they have been gradually developed in the past few years. By introducing stronger standards to improve the manufacturing process, as well as improving consumers’ understanding of how to respect these batteries, the safety of lithium-ion batteries has been significantly improved. It’s a battery technology that has gone through a bad and ugly stage and now has a good battery option that can enhance our daily lives. Bad publicity and security scares should be in the past, at least for non-counterfeit products. With the development of lithium-ion battery technology, it will become more and more mainstream in the supply and demand of electronic equipment.
