According to the latest data, in the first month of 2021, the monthly increment of 5g users in South Korea exceeded 1 million for the first time, and the total number of users reached 12.87 million, an increase of 8.6% on a month on month basis. By the end of January 2021, the penetration rate of 5g users in South Korea will reach 18.2%. It is worth noting that LGU + was originally the most vulnerable of the three communication operators in South Korea, but with the help of 5g, it has risen from the third in the market to the second in the market, which is inseparable from VR / AR applications.
Thanks to the first layout in VR / AR business, LGU + made a counter attack. LGU + first invested in ventavr, the world’s leading VR content production technology company. In the first month of 5g business, LGU + produced more than 100 VR content and released them exclusively. Subsequently, LGU + established the first studio in Asia specializing in AR content, providing exclusive content for a number of Korean idol singers. The initial total number of VR film sources of LGU + was about 600. In two years, it has increased to more than 4000, ahead of the other two operators.
Two months before 5g was put into commercial use in South Korea, VR / AR content had contributed about 20% of 5g traffic. In May 2020, the vice president of LGU + technology development group once said that compared with 4G, 5g data traffic has nearly tripled, and users’ monthly traffic has reached 30.6gb. At present, about 40% of 5g users in South Korea are using VR / AR services and “eat” 35% of 5g traffic, so VR / AR has established the status of 5g “traffic killer”.
