The freezing of 5g R16 standard is not only a milestone in the development of 5g, but also will be of great benefit to the rapid development of 5g. In this context, the communication world reporter interviewed Yan Binfeng, director of the technical committee of China Unicom Research Institute for the first time. Like all practitioners in the communication industry, he was very concerned about the R16 standard freeze. Deepen vertical industry application scenarios

Help operators transform

Since 3GPP frozen the R4 version of 3G standard in 2001, it continued to release the new version of standard in the form of R + digital number. According to Yan Binfeng, the 5g standard series formulated by 3GPP evolved according to the version. At present, three versions are planned, namely R15, R16 and R17. In June 2019, the official version of 5g R15 was frozen. The main body is for consumer markets, such as smart phones, to expand and enhance its embB features, so that users feel the experience of 1Gbps + level ultra-high rate. While the officially frozen R16 version further enhances its embB characteristics (such as multi antenna technology enhancement, mobility enhancement, Ca and DC capability enhancement, terminal energy saving, terminal signaling optimization, etc.), it also further improves the urllc characteristics and expands and deepens the application scenarios of vertical industries.

Yan Binfeng, for example, in terms of urllc enhancement and industrial Internet projects, the R16 version of 5g new technology can support 1 microsecond synchronization accuracy, 0.5-1 millisecond ultra-low air interface delay and 99.9999% ultra-high reliability, providing unlimited possibilities for 5g telemedicine, industrial automation control, distance education and other fields; In the 5g vehicle networking v2x enhancement project, the technical scheme for the direct communication capability between vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructure has been completed. Through the introduction of multicast, optimized perception, scheduling, retransmission and other technologies, v2x vehicle formation, automatic driving, remote driving, extension sensor and other applications have been fully enabled; In the network slicing capability enhancement project, the capabilities of slicing authentication, billing and automatic scheduling management are further improved, so that operators can separate multiple virtual end-to-end networks on a unified infrastructure, so as to better meet the rich industrial application needs; There are also 5g satellite access (non land mobile network communication), 5g positioning and other projects, which provide broad development prospects for the vertical industry.

“The freezing of 5g R16 standard will undoubtedly greatly promote the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries, support the rapid development of digital economy, and help operators transform to a digital, cloud and intelligent service architecture.” Yan Binfeng said.

5g millimeter wave industry will accelerate to maturity

The urllc capability of 3GPP R16 has achieved 1 microsecond synchronization accuracy, 0.5-1 millisecond ultra-low air interface delay and 99.9999% ultra-high reliability, which has reached or even exceeded the original ITU definition of technical indicators for urllc scenarios. In terms of millimeter wave, R16 version and R16 version increase the carrier aggregation capability of millimeter wave and medium band, enhance the beam function of millimeter wave, and introduce the integrated access backhaul (IAB) technology, which provides great convenience for the deployment, operation and maintenance of millimeter wave access backhaul.

Yan Binfeng specifically mentioned: “As the only official communication service partner of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and winter Paralympic Games, China Unicom has always paid close attention to the development of 5g millimeter wave technology. The epidemic affected the 5g standard process to a certain extent

5g network deployment is on schedule

At the plenary session in March this year, 3GPP announced that the R17 version will be extended for three months, that is, the core specification of 5g R17 will be frozen in September 2021. In Yan Binfeng’s view, the epidemic will undoubtedly have a great impact on the global 5g standard process. Firstly, the 4 regular 3GPP meetings every year were changed into online electronic meetings in the first half of this year, and the standards were reviewed, revised and released through e-mail discussion; The meeting cycle is also adjusted from face-to-face meetings of one week each time to electronic meetings of two or even three weeks each time. Many international standards representatives not only need to overcome the impact of time difference and discuss technical issues through frequent teleconferences and emails, but also ensure that the preciseness and accuracy of 5g standards are not affected.

According to Yan Binfeng, at present, each standard subgroup of 3GPP has held at least two large-scale electronic conferences, and has made great optimization and improvement in focusing on technical issues, improving conference efficiency and online conference process management, so as to try to ensure that 5g standards can be released on schedule. For the global 5g commercial deployment, since most of the currently deployed 5g network versions are based on the R15 version frozen in June 2019, the standard lag of R16 and R17 will not have a great impact on the 5g network deployment for the time being. However, the epidemic itself has brought great challenges to the construction of 5g infrastructure.

However, at the same time, China attaches great importance to strengthening the construction of 5g infrastructure. In March 2020, the Ministry of industry and information technology issued the notice on promoting the accelerated development of 5g, putting forward initiatives such as accelerating the progress of 5g network construction and accelerating the research and development of 5g application modules; In May 2020, 5g was included in the “new infrastructure” in the government work report, which played an important role in accelerating the development of 5g and boosting the confidence of the communication industry. The three major operators have also stated that the goal of 5g base station construction this year will be completed as scheduled.

Active participation and continuous innovation

China Unicom leads a number of standards work

According to Yan Binfeng, as an active participant in 3GPP 5g technical standards, China Unicom has always adhered to the concept of standard leading and technology first. It has not only carried out a large number of innovation work in international standards such as 5g networks and terminals, but also served as the reporter of many important projects.

In 3GPP R16 5g standard, the project of 2.1GHz band 50MHz bandwidth led by China Unicom has been successfully concluded. This project with continuous 50m bandwidth in FDD band for the first time is a further sign of deepening cooperation between China Unicom and China Telecom in 5g co construction and sharing, which will promote the rapid development of global 5g network and terminal equipment to support FDD large bandwidth industry, And provide better 5g service experience for 5g users in China; In R16, the NSA FDD + TDD high-power terminal standard led by China Unicom is also about to be concluded. This project will effectively improve the uplink coverage of 3.5GHz network and bring better edge service experience to users; In terms of terminal conformance test standards, China Unicom also led the RF conformance terminal standards under SA architecture, further promoting the maturity of 5g SA terminal industry; Meanwhile, China Unicom also led the 4G / 5G Integrated Architecture Evolution Project in the R17 version, which is of great significance to the architecture innovation of 5g wireless network.

From the development process of communication standards, the voice of Chinese forces in communication standards is expanding. Yan Binfeng said that China’s submission of 3GPP international manuscripts on 5g standards has exceeded 35% of the global total. Chinese enterprises such as Huawei and ZTE rank among the top 10 in the world, and the number of SEP in China accounts for 33% of the world; At the same time, China’s key positions in international organizations have increased significantly, which means that China has made an important contribution to global mobile communication standardization.
