On January 15, 2020, Volvo cars and China Unicom signed a cooperation agreement. The two sides announced that they would jointly research, develop and test the vehicle v2x technology under 5g empowerment.
Yuan Xiaolin, global senior vice president of Volvo car group and President and CEO of Volvo car Asia Pacific region, has great confidence in the development prospect of Volvo in the 5g era. He said that “Volvo will seize the opportunity, give full play to its advantages, develop cooperation and make the smart transportation picture land as soon as possible”.
Liang Baojun, deputy general manager of China United Network Communication Group Co., Ltd., regards the automobile industry as “the industry with the closest combination with 5g, the richest applications and the broadest prospects”. He believes that 5g will better promote the new four modernizations revolution of automobile.
The cooperation between Volvo and China Unicom is “born at the right time”. If 2019 is the year when 5g will set sail, 2020 will be the first year for 5g to become commercialized.
5g empowering Volvo “safe smart car”?
As early as 2012, Volvo and China Unicom had carried out cooperation in the field of vehicle networking. China Unicom has always been the communication supplier of Volvo on call attendant housekeeper. In this strategic cooperation, the two sides will start to study various applications of 5g technology in the field of automobile and infrastructure communication, so as to explore its improvement potential in safety, sustainable development, customer convenience, automatic driving and other aspects. The two sides will set up a joint research group in Shanghai to jointly study, develop and test the application of 5g and emerging v2x technology in automobiles.
It is reported that the first phase of the pre research project based on 5g-v2x has successfully achieved the goal of automatic valet parking. Through the installation of 5g and v2x communication equipment on the existing Volvo mass-produced vehicles, the intelligent transformation of the field end, and the integration of v2n (vehicle to cloud), V2I (vehicle to infrastructure), V2V (vehicle to vehicle) and other technologies as well as the existing vehicle perception equipment, the automatic valet parking under specific scenes (testing ground) has been realized, Let people see the dawn of the realization of some scenes of automatic driving in 5g era.
“In the early stage, we focused on the AVP project at the field end.” Xie Baojun, senior R & D director of Volvo cars Asia Pacific region, revealed that the selection of AVP scenario test with high technical difficulty is mainly due to its higher requirements for field end equipment and communication quality. In the AVP project, Volvo has realized automatic avoidance of pedestrians and vehicles.

Unmanned valet parking is only the starting point of bilateral cooperation. Li Jun, CTO of China Unicom Smart Network Technology Co., Ltd., told yiou automobile that the conceptual discussion between the two sides will move towards commercialization in 2020.
The cooperation between Volvo and China Unicom further proves that the Internet of vehicles industry has a strong industrial driving force.
The connection and interaction requirements of the Internet of vehicles for people, vehicles, roads, networks and other factors make the automobile, electronics, information and communication, transportation, traffic management and other industries break barriers, connect with each other and develop together. In the 5g-v2x industrial ecology, there are countless enterprises that “build cars on Curves”.
Taking the communication chip as an example, Huawei and other enterprises have launched the Internet of vehicles lte-v2x chip and chip based communication module, and ZTE has also released the lte-v2x test module based on Qualcomm chip. In many fields, such as application services, intelligent cockpit and automatic driving, China has a huge industrial ecological foundation.
In the cooperative relationship between Volvo and China Unicom, the former, as a global luxury brand, is mainly responsible for the vehicle end business, while the latter, as a 5g network supplier, focuses more on the 5g network business, “smart car, smart road. To realize the road of wisdom, the foundation is to have a network.” Li Jun stressed.

Safety is the guiding principle for Volvo to develop smart cars.
Volvo has a deep reserve of automatic driving technology. As early as 2015, its XC90 equipped with pilot assist navigation assistance system has achieved mass production. This model can realize automatic following in congested road conditions at the speed of 0-50km / h. In 2016, the pilot assist navigation assistance system was upgraded to the second generation. The S90 luxury car equipped with this system has realized quasi automatic driving of 0-130 km / h without following the car in front. At the same time, it also has the functions of steering support, distance maintenance and speed control.
In the choice of technical route, Volvo takes safety as the focus of consideration. Xie Baojun said that in the eyes of Volvo, which puts safety first, there are only two kinds of automatic driving: ADAS (driving assistance function) for which the driver is fully responsible, and ad (highly automatic driving) without human driver control.
V2x is the key to realize highly automatic driving. On the one hand, single vehicle intelligence has encountered a bottleneck in technology. Almost all advanced autonomous vehicles are equipped with lidar, but the latter can only be adopted by car enterprises if the cost is reduced to 1000 yuan. Vehicle road coordination is the only way out in adversity.
On the other hand, v2x can effectively ensure the safety of autonomous vehicles. It can multiply the error rate between single vehicle intelligence and vehicle road coordination. Under “double insurance”, automatic driving will become very safe and reliable.
At present, v2x is divided into two technical routes: c-v2x based on cellular network and DSRC based on Wi Fi. The former has the advantages of large coverage, long communication distance and low delay, making it the mainstream technical route in the current industry.

5g is the Pearl on the crown of cellular network, “5g will help the automobile industry”The car industry is truly intelligent and enters the fast lane of automatic driving. ” Shi Jianhua, Deputy Secretary General of China Automobile Industry Association, summed up the significance of 5g to the automobile industry.
