On January 15, 2020, Volvo cars and China Unicom signed a cooperation agreement. The two sides announced that they would jointly research, develop and test the vehicle v2x technology under 5g empowerment.

He believes that 5g will better promote the new four modernizations revolution of automobile.

The cooperation between Volvo and China Unicom is “born at the right time”. If 2019 is the year when 5g will set sail, 2020 will be the first year for 5g to become commercialized.

5g empowering Volvo “safe smart car”?

As early as 2012, Volvo and China Unicom had carried out cooperation in the field of vehicle networking. Through the installation of 5g and v2x communication equipment on the existing Volvo mass-produced vehicles, the intelligent transformation of the field end, and the integration of v2n (vehicle to cloud), V2I (vehicle to infrastructure), V2V (vehicle to vehicle) and other technologies as well as the existing vehicle perception equipment, the automatic valet parking under specific scenes (testing ground) has been realized, Let people see the dawn of the realization of some scenes of automatic driving in 5g era.

The connection and interaction requirements of the Internet of vehicles for people, vehicles, roads, networks and other factors make the automobile, electronics, information and communication, transportation, traffic management and other industries break barriers, connect with each other and develop together. Taking the communication chip as an example, Huawei and other enterprises have launched the Internet of vehicles lte-v2x chip and chip based communication module, and ZTE has also released the lte-v2x test module based on Qualcomm chip. In many fields, such as application services, intelligent cockpit and automatic driving, China has a huge industrial ecological foundation.

In the cooperative relationship between Volvo and China Unicom, the former, as a global luxury brand, is mainly responsible for the vehicle end business, while the latter, as a 5g network supplier, focuses more on the 5g network business, “smart car, smart road. Safety is the guiding principle for Volvo to develop smart cars.

Volvo has a deep reserve of automatic driving technology. As early as 2015, its XC90 equipped with pilot assist navigation assistance system has achieved mass production. V2x is the key to realize highly automatic driving. On the one hand, single vehicle intelligence has encountered a bottleneck in technology. Almost all advanced autonomous vehicles are equipped with lidar, but the latter can only be adopted by car enterprises if the cost is reduced to 1000 yuan. Vehicle road coordination is the only way out in adversity.

On the other hand, v2x can effectively ensure the safety of autonomous vehicles. It can multiply the error rate between single vehicle intelligence and vehicle road coordination. Under “double insurance”, automatic driving will become very safe and reliable.

At present, v2x is divided into two technical routes: c-v2x based on cellular network and DSRC based on Wi Fi. The former has the advantages of large coverage, long communication distance and low delay, making it the mainstream technical route in the current industry.
