Under the opportunity of “new infrastructure” policy, the construction of 5g network coverage continues to deepen, the integration application empowerment continues to deepen, and the 5g industrial chain accelerates to mature.
Guided by SA networking, the number of 5g base stations exceeds 700000
In the past year, China’s 5g network construction has developed rapidly. According to Liu Liehong, Vice Minister of the Ministry of industry and information technology, China has built nearly 700000 base stations this year, and the number of 5g terminal connections has exceeded 180 million.
In 2020, the construction of 5g will focus on SA architecture. China Mobile has built the world’s largest 5gsa commercial core network. As of the beginning of November, the total number of 5gsa base stations actually opened by China Mobile has reached 385000, and 5g in 337 cities has SA commercial capacity. In 2021, China Mobile will reach a new level in network scale, basically realizing 5g good coverage of cities, counties, urban areas and some key towns in China.
China Unicom and China Telecom have jointly built and shared 5g network. On September 30 this year, China Unicom has completed the construction and business of the world’s first 5g co built and shared network, and has completed the end-to-end capability deployment of SA independent networking mode. As of October 2020, the scale of 5g sharing between the two sides has reached more than 300000 stations, covering all cities above prefecture level in China. In addition, combined with multi carrier aggregation technology, the peak download rate of China Unicom users reached a new high of more than 2000 MBP / s.
China Radio and television 5g pilot (phase I) project, the fourth largest operator, has also been started, with construction in 6 core nodes in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou and 10 backbone nodes in Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai and Chengdu. In addition, China Radio and television and China Mobile signed a strategic agreement to build and share a 700MHz 5g wireless access network with a 1:1 investment ratio, releasing 5g’s new momentum.

5g development press the “fast forward” key, applications bloom everywhere
In addition to the construction of base stations, 5g applications in China are also developing in an all-round way, and demonstration application cases of 5g industry applications are blooming everywhere.
During the epidemic period, 5g application fully helped the epidemic prevention and control: China Telecom launched 5g + infrared thermal imaging temperature measurement system, which could complete the temperature measurement work without contact; China Mobile 5g + 4K high-definition video conference command system helped the headquarters to observe the situation of suspected patients; China Unicom 5g network and medical cloud platform helped cross regional multidisciplinary consultation, etc.
After the resumption of work and production, 5g development has pressed the “fast forward” key to accelerate the application incubation, and a large number of benchmarking of 5g vertical industry applications have emerged. The third “blooming Cup” 5g application competition received 4289 entries, covering 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government.
5g enables thousands of industries, and industrial Internet has become the main battlefield of 5g applications. China Telecom is deeply engaged in industrial Internet, and the intelligent application of 5g cloud network has been implemented nationwide, covering eight industries, including steel, cement, chemical industry, mining, electric power, automobile, household appliances and construction machinery. Shanghai Baowu, conch cement, Hubei sanning chemical, Qingdao State Grid, Geely Automobile, Midea Group and other enterprises have built 5g cloud Network + industrial Internet benchmarking projects.
In order to promote the digital transformation and development of traditional industries, China Mobile focused on 15 industries, including 5g smart factory, smart grid, smart steel, smart port and automatic driving, launched 5g application series scenarios, and cooperated with industry partners to build more than 100 group level leading demonstration projects and more than 2000 provincial-level regional characteristic projects.
China Unicom has taken the lead in establishing “5g application innovation alliance”, aggregating more than 1000 members in the industrial chain. It has carried out 5g innovation cooperation with more than 400 customers and partners in more than 10 vertical industries, incubated more than 100 5g innovative business projects, and made breakthrough progress in key fields such as industrial Internet, smart medical care, smart education, security, AR / VR, etc.
From “can use” to “easy to use”, 5gr16 standard freezing
5g development, standards first. On July 3, 2020, the R16 version of 5g standard will be frozen, and the first evolution version of 5g standard will be completed. From “usable” to “easy to use”, the freezing of R16 version has become an important milestone in 5g commercial process.
R16 further enhances 5g’s ability to better serve industry applications and improves 5g’s efficiency by focusing on “new capability development”, “potential tapping of existing capabilities” and “cost reduction and efficiency enhancement of operation and maintenance”. R16 standard not only enhances the function of 5g, but also gives more consideration to the cost, efficiency, efficiency and other factors, so as to make the communication infrastructure investment play a greater role, make 5g further enter all walks of life, give birth to new digital ecological industry, and further help the digital transformation of social economy.
After the R16 version was frozen, the progress of R17 standardization has become a hot topic in the industry. R17 standard will more comprehensively cover vertical industry capabilities, further enhance basic capabilities such as edge computing and network slicing, and take into account issues such as user experience guarantee and business model. Recently, 3GPP announced that the freezing time of the latest evolution version R17 of 5g will be further postponed for half a year, that is, the freezing of the version protocol code will be completed in June 2022.
5g test is progressing smoothly, network slice and millimeter wave are the key points
The comprehensive and systematic test is also the “Pathfinder” of 5g’s successful commercial use, and the end-to-end network slicing test in China is progressing smoothly. Huawei has completed the E2E network slicing test of the same manufacturer based on SPN and ipran; ZTE has completed the E2E network slicing test of the same manufacturer based on SPN and partial ipran; China Xinke has partially completed the E2E network slicing test of the same manufacturer based on SPN.
SA chips and terminals are also the focus of testing in 2020. In the aspect of chip system interoperability, 5gc interoperability, 4G / 5G interoperability, 5g voice solution, SA physical layer key technology and other 5gsa related technical characteristics are mainly verified. Some system manufacturers still need to improve the 4G / 5G interoperability, different frequency switching and other aspects to meet the test requirements. In terms of terminals, NSA / SA mobile phone testing focuses on the testing of commercial terminal functions, services, operation stability (peak value, call success rate, long-term insurance), etc.
Millimeter wave is one of the key technologies for the next development of 5g. In 2021, China will launch the technical research and product testing work for 3gppr16, focusing on millimeter wave equipment and networking testing and small-scale application test and demonstration, carry out 6GHz frequency research and testing, actively promote the development and optimization of millimeter wave base station, chip and RF module, and study the adaptability of millimeter wave Use the scene to explore the integration of millimeter wave and industrial applications.
In the test work of imt-2020 (5g) promotion group, Huawei, ZTE and Nokia bell have completed the main functions, RF and outfield performance tests of millimeter wave key technology test, realized the main key technologies of millimeter wave, carried out millimeter wave radiation RF test, supported China’s millimeter wave planning work, and further improved and optimized the performance indicators of millimeter wave equipment.
The number of 5g package users exceeds 200 million, and the terminal industry chain is increasingly mature
5g is booming. In the field of TOC, the number of 5g package users has reached a new high. The number of domestic 5g package users has exceeded 200 million, of which the number of China Mobile’s 5g package users has now exceeded 130 million, and the number of China Telecom’s 5g package users has also reached 71.86 million (the number of China Unicom’s 5g package users has not been disclosed yet). For individual user applications, the three operators released the “5g news white paper”.
The terminal is a must for the development of 5g individual users. In this year, the major mobile phone brands have basically transferred from 4G battlefield to 5g battlefield, and the variety of 5g terminals has been constantly enriched. According to the statistics of Xintong Institute, from January to October, there were 183 new models of 5g mobile phones on the domestic market, with 124 million units shipped, accounting for 49.4%. This year, 5g has been commercial for one year, and the price of 5g mobile phone has dropped from 5000 yuan for high-end mobile phone to 1000 yuan for entry-level mobile phone.
At the same time, with the entry of China Radio and television 5g, 700MHz terminal products are gradually mature. By the end of November 2020, there are 54 5g terminals approved to support 700MHz band in China.
5g terminal chip is also accelerating development, 5g terminal chip has fully supported SA networking mode. In 2020, MediaTek will launch Tianji 1000plus, Qualcomm will launch 5gsoc chip, snapdragon 865 and 888 chip, Huawei will launch Kirin 9000 chip, Apple will launch A14 bionic chip with iPhone 12, Samsung will launch exynos1080 chip, and Ziguang zhanrui will launch Huben t7520 chip.
