In the past three years, breakthroughs have been made in several key technologies of the XR terminal. For example, the resolution has been increased from 2K to 8K, which can provide an experience similar to 720P on mobile phones; the interaction method has been improved from 3DoF to 6DoF, which supports full head and body. Orientation interaction; the weight and price of glasses that users are particularly concerned about have also dropped significantly, and XR terminals that are comfortable to wear have entered the ranks of entry-level consumer products.

Currently, services such as XR online games, XR live broadcasts, and XR movie viewing are usually deployed in non-cloud deployments. Users need to download the complete content locally to experience them. Such XR services have entered a mature stage of development. Another type of cloudification model, benefiting from the rapid development of AI technology in the past two years, has increased the efficiency of content production and real-time rendering by nearly 1,000 times. The improvement of production efficiency will greatly reduce the development cost of cloud XR content and accelerate the popularization of content.

The explosion of metaverse content will place higher demands on the network. The real-time interaction between the virtual world and the real world requires a rate of 500Mbps and a delay of 20 milliseconds. The current 5G network can already meet this demand. Facing the future, the real-time digital twin mirrors the real world in the virtual world in real time, and applies it to the real world through simulation, calculation, and feedback, which requires symmetrical uplink and downlink transmission bandwidth. There is also real-time holographic interaction, which deeply integrates the virtual world and the real world, and brings a full-real and full-sensing interactive experience. Gao Quanzhong said that building a ubiquitous network with large bandwidth and low latency is the key to supporting the development of the Metaverse.

The current 5G network can already support the development of XR services. For large-scale commercial use, 5.5G has comprehensively improved network capabilities, such as downlink 10Gbps and uplink 1Gbps, and the user experience has been improved by 10 times. Not only that, 5.5G can also transmit tactile perception information in real time on the basis of vision and hearing, so the transmission delay and stability have also been greatly enhanced.

For the large-scale popularization of XR services, it is not only necessary to enhance the capabilities of 5G itself, but also to build an end-to-end synergy mechanism to further increase network capacity and lower the threshold for business popularization while ensuring XR user experience, Gao Quanzhong emphasized. 5.5G ensures that important frames of XR services are preferentially transmitted through intelligent collaborative innovation. Compared with the non-cooperative mechanism, the network capacity is increased by more than 5 times. For the Metaverse industry, users can also obtain high-quality experience in areas with weak network performance, and the service distribution cost of content operators will also be greatly reduced.

Gao Quanzhong finally said that on the basis of 5G Gigabit network, 5.5G will create a 10 Gigabit experience layer, and provide key supports such as symmetrical bandwidth, tactile XR, stable and low latency, large capacity, and ubiquitous experience.
